Product Description:
A long-extinct beetle appears in a physics lab. Four-and-a-half people and a dog are hurled 65 million years through time, to the Age of the Dinosaurs, and paleontologist Julian Whitney and his companions have only one chance for rescue. Meanwhile in the lab, police chief Sharon Earles must solve the mystery of why half a body remains where five people had just been. Physicists try to determine what went wrong but can they fix the vault in time to retrieve the missing people—and do they want to?

Rated by buyers 1 out of 5 stars - A KICK TO THE GONADS
This book started out ok, but a little slow. Then it got better with descriptons of the dinosaurs and plants, then it got worse. Then it got real bad.

I couldnt stand the people in it, except for the guards, the Shanker professor and his german shepard. But then the end was a real grey hole. I was very disappointed and felt cheated that I read all the way through, just to have stupid stuff happen and it was like getting a foot to the gonads. I hate books like that.

This book has the good dinosaurs going for it and that is all.

Rated by buyers 2 out of 5 stars - A Good Premise, But Ultimately a Dull Read
I really wanted to like this book. I never really outgrew my dinosaur phase, so any sci-fi having to do with dinosaurs catches me eye. The premise is interesting enough, but the writing is awful. The characters don't act or think like real people, and they're all so unintelligent. It's like something a high schooler would write. The authors are Ph.D.s, but they should probably stick to the sciences. I feel like they wrote this with the mindset that their readers don't know a thing about science, because some of the plot devices and dialogue make absolutely no sense. Any scene involving computers was especially bad. Even the dinosaur scenes weren't very exciting. A total disappointment.

Rated by buyers 4 out of 5 stars - Fantastic Read!
I am just your average mostly stay at home mom. (work on weekends as a nurse) A friend had recommended the book. I bought it and absolutely loved it. It was very exciting and thrilling. I personally loved the main characters and bonded with them immediately. I loved the romance brewing between Yariko and Julian. The description of the Cretaceous period was absolutely amazing. I felt like I was there with them. It introduced me to a world long gone.
I only had two gripes. 1. I didn't like the name Yariko for the main character. It seemed awkward for me every time I read her name. I loved her but I hated her name! And I couldn't get used to it no matter what I did. I didn't even know if I was saying her name right. I wish they would have used a common name like Becky or Susan. Don't be fancy. Keep it simple.
2. I didn't like Carl. I thought his knowledge didn't make sense whatsoever. Being quiet and not saying much! How could he not know about Julians world? His grandmother never mentioned it once!
Here's the thing. If I was stuck back in time with Julian and had kids, I would beat in to my kids about what happened and why we were there. I would tell them ALL about my world. Constantly! They would know it well before I died. I would tell them to keep passing it along to keep our story alive. I would tell them if they saw humans if would be rescue, even though unlikely. By the time they met Carl he would know of the situation. He might not know the surprise! I don't want to say it and ruin the book, but he would know they were from the future. He would have recognized them immediately. He would of said, "Oh my gosh. I am so glad to meet you. I have heard stories about your people through the generations. Are you from the future? Are you here to rescue me?" Indians pass on stories for thousands of generations so why not for three generations? He wouldn't have been dumb and not known a thing. I just don't believe that!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! He should have had some knowledge. Maybe not all, but SOME! He would have learned from past generations that Cretaceous was 65 million years before humans. So he should have been as shocked to see Julian, as Julian was to see him. "Did you come from the portal, the lab?" Carl would have asked. "I heard all about it from previous generations. Humans aren't supposed to be in this time frame."
Otherwise, I thought this book was pretty awesome! It is a fantastic and fun read. And ALWAYS kept my attention! And was very hard to put down!

Rated by buyers 4 out of 5 stars - Freak accident sends profs to dinosaur age
Let's start with the bottom line. Though I was once a great science fiction fan, in recent years, I have turned away from that genre almost completely in favor of classical literature, history, anthropology, and the odd book of another kind. If I were to rank CRETACEOUS DAWN alongside Balzac, Turgenev, Pamuk, or Kadare (to choose a few at random), I don't think I could give it many stars. That would be quite unfair, however. We'll have to rank the book within the single category of science fiction and there I would give it a full five stars. It's a great read! If you have any liking for science fiction, you're going to love this one, which is extremely fast paced. In addition, it's not of the "bug-eyed monster meets space hero-with-ray-gun" type. You can actually learn a huge amount because the authors know their Cretaceous zoology, botany, geography, and meteorology. They've managed to package all this knowledge in a real page turner.

Two professors in a small South Dakota college are doing secret physics experiments termed "graviton". It's a little unrealistic to think such experiments might be done in such a college, but never mind. The science here is complete fantasy. OK. They realize they are beginning to transport matter and living things into the lab from somewhere else. The living things are beetles unknown in America. A paleontologist is called. The subsequent step in the experiments occurs just when he's in the lab. There's an explosion and nobody is left in the graviton chamber. The local sheriff tries to figure out where the group has gone...four humans and a dog. They have been transported back to the Cretaceous Age and must immediately fight off dinosaurs of all kinds, find food and shelter, make weapons, and survive in a swampy, humid environment sixty-five million years before their own time. These transportations through time don't seem to be permanent, though, so if they can find the right place, they might re-appear in the lab. It appears that they'll have to travel a thousand miles to get to that spot. Innumerable dangers, twists and turns of a plot, and fantastic discoveries abound. Will they ever get back to our times ? Who among them will make it ? Can they escape the velociraptors, dromaeosaurs, the earth-shaking T-rex, and huge herds of spiky triceratops ? What will they see on their voyage in another epoch ? It's all very interesting and exciting. There's even a love story of sorts---love & dinosaurs indeed ! Read this one.

Rated by buyers 5 out of 5 stars - A carnivorous book!
During a scientific experiment gone horribly wrong, a brave, wuvable German Sheperd named Hilda + 4 people are transported back to the Cretaceous period. The people are: Frank (a security guard with a knack for being a survivalist), Julian (a clumsy Paleontologist), Yariko (a lovely young Oriental physicist) and Dr. Shanker (a rather obnoxious physicist). They find themselves in an alien world full of scary dinosaurs, with one remote chance of finding their way back to the 21st century.

There are, to be sure, a few parallels to Jurassic Park. However, there are some very crucial differences as well. Instead of being trapped on an island with a handful of dangerous dinosaurs, in this story it's the homo sapiens who are the anachronisms. Or, to put it another way, our friends are immersed into the world of the Cretaceous, where not only the animals but also the plant life, ecology, geology & climate belong to the age of the dinosaurs. Even worse, they are bereft of any 21st century technology to fend off the numerous threats which live in their new hostile environment.

This is a fairly quick read, basically because it's a pretty captivating story. Incessantly, the reader is inclined to constantly wonder what sorts of beasts the unlucky folks are going to stumble across next. There are also a few plot-twists which add to the dinosaur-skin texture of the novel.

This book is highly recommended for any persons who have an interest in quantum mechanics, paleontology, science or even just basic adventure stories. The tale struck me as a cross between Michael Crichton and H.G. Wells. If you're ever surfing channels & find yourself watching Jurassic Fight Club: Season 1 on the HISTORY channel, then this book is probably for you!
