Storyteller Recaptures the Mystery of the Ancient Scriptures, Launches Innovative Webcast
Only God could tell a story this ludicrous and then claim that it’s true,' says Steven James, who penned Story: Recapture the Mystery (Revell, Feb. 2006), which makes the Bible come alive in provocative ways, encapsulating the mystery of the Christian story.
James, a professional storyteller from eastern Tennessee, grew up in a Christian home—but fell in love with Jesus at age 21 on Easter Sunday.
Through 30 short chapters, James revisits key scenes from the Christian story: from the Garden of Eden to the Israelites’ plea for freedom and the love/hate struggles between people and God in the Old Testament. Story illuminates Jesus’s miraculous birth and daring ministry on earth, building to the 'rising terror' of the crucifixion and rediscovery of freedom following the resurrection.
At one point, James paints the brutal murder of Abel in the Old Testament through the eyes of his brother Cain. He views Jesus dancing and turning water into wine at the wedding feast at Cana through the testimony of the bewildered bride. At another, he writes as a frightened onlooker as Jesus struggles to carry his cross to Golgotha, and captures the chaos sweeping through the Holy Land following the resurrection. All the while, James relates the events of the Bible to life on earth today.
'I’m thankful Jesus didn’t come to start another religion. Jesus didn’t arrive on earth to debate theology but to propose marriage. In a very real spiritual sense, God is courting us. Christianity is wild. It’s intimate. It’s heartbreaking and soul-mending,' writes James.
However, James believes the real meaning of Christianity, especially Easter, has been lost in the last 2,000 years. 'Easter has evolved into just another nice, harmless, spineless, little holiday . . . when it’s supposed to be about a wrestling match between life and death, a cosmic struggle between good and evil.' James invites readers to meet Jesus again—or for the very very first time.

I'm not going to say this book "changed my life." It didn't and I don't think the author, Steven James, would want me to claim it did. What it did do, though, was give me a banquet of food for thought. It caused me to re-think God's story, how things happened, how history unfolded, how the battle of the ages, the struggle for the human soul, unfurled. It helped me see Jesus as a man, like all of us, human, and yet so much more, because he was also God, our Creator, Lord, LORD, Savior. James' way with words made the book an enjoyable read. I would recommend this book to anyone tired of viewing the story of the Bible, God's story, through the same old tired lenses. Take a gander, I think you'll be challenged and provoked to do some deep thinking.

This book is chock-full of what Stephen Colbert aptly terms "truthiness" - things that feel true... regardless of whether they actually are. Facts take a distant back seat in many places, the very first of which is the poem opening the very first chapter, where James states that God gets excited about butterflies. What on earth makes him think that? I mean, it sounds warm and fuzzy, but there's not the slightest reason to believe that we can know what God's thinking, and to just assign Him our warmest, fuzziest emotions is shallow at best.
Later, while relating the story of The Fall (Eve,the Apple, the Snake, etc.), the author discusses how the story might be myth or it might have literally happened that way... and "it doesn't matter which, it's still true" So even if an event never happened, it can still be true. Facts are really important things in shaping what we believe.. saying they're less important than what we want to be true does the reader a disservice. If he meant that "regardless of whether it happened, the story has relevance to our lives," he should have just said that.

This is the story of God and His people (re)told through narrative, poetry and scripture, all of which are intermixed perfectly, giving the reader the tools necessary to discover (or maybe rediscover) the beautiful mystery of our God.
Nearly every chapter left me in greater awe of our God. The length of the chapters, and the book itself, are perfect. It's modern and edgy in the sense that it gets back to the roots of Christianity. It's just an overall great read that also makes a great gift.

In his charmingly artsy, poetic, story-teller style, Steven James has carefully crafted each sentence of Story with the goal of helping us live in the pages of God's Word.
Steven takes our hands and walks us through the devastating downfall of man. He waits and hurts with us during the long years of God's silence. He joyfully accompanies us to the wedding, where the mystery of God's Son begins to be revealed. Steven agonizes and cries with us at Golgotha, then rejoices with us at the future wedding at the end of our days. Steven takes us down these paths of experiencing the Story, so we may be enlightened and enriched by that journey.
This book is rich with emotions, longings, prose and truth. Oh to memorize and quote the lines of Story when the occasion begs for it.

I now view the Gospel completely differently. Thank you, Mr. James, for bringing life to such a complex and beautiful story. For bringing life to my life. I've begun reading this to my young teen children and it fascinates them as well. I believe that years of Sunday school lessons will take on new, personal meaning for them as a result of this book.
Everyone I know will get a copy of Story for Christmas. :)
