Product Description:
When Claire Shaw wakes in a Seattle hospital, she remembers nothing of what has happened to her. She doesn't recognize the concerned faces of her husband and friends. She knows only that she is lucky to be alive, the single surviving victim of a vicious serial killer. She was a mistake - not like the others. She didn't understand. That was obvious now. But she would come to understand. Next time, there would be no escape - and her eyes would fill with that perfect, beautiful terror...On an island isolated from the mainland, Claire has returned to a life she barely knows anymore. A town that feels as if it, too, is hiding something in its dark woods, remote cabins, and chilly smiles. Bit by bit, Claire's memory is taking terrifying shape in a place where fear is very much at home...

Left for Dead was only my second book by this author and I have to admit that it was much better than the very first book "Killing Spree" I read. The characters were much more developed and likable and the plot had some interesting twists and turns throughout the story. The author definitly does a good job of holding the reader's attention until the very end with more than one mystery to solve along the way. My only problem with this author's technique of writing is the lack of suspects he omits. He does a great job of keeping the suspense building, but the reveal is a little too predictable and therefore I couldn't give it more than 4 stars.
Plot: A serial killer is on the loose. The police are calling him Rembrandt because of his artistic angle of giving his victims makeovers and preserving their looks with plastic bags over their faces. One victim is found alive though. Police are anxious to hear what the woman knows about this killer, but she has no recollection of the attack or even who she is. Something so traumatic has happened to her that she has blocked out all memories of her life before the accident. But when her memory slowly returns in small fragments, the woman realizes that she has a lot more than just a serial killer after her. Immediately she senses that the people around her are hiding something from her. What do they all seem to know that she doesn't? And can she find out the truth before it is too late?
Is it worth buying?
I would say yes. Good suspense. Clever twists to the plot and more mystery than just the serial killer angle.

I really liked this book. It was the very first time I have read this author and I will try others of his. The plot was different and it kept me guessing. I could hardly put it down. It had some interesting twists as well.

I'm posting this review for one reason: to warn others in search of a good mystery/crime novel to look elsewhere. This novel boasts a lot of rave reviews from readers, which encouraged me to take a chance. Boy, was I burned. Don't let it happen to you!
As another reviewer pointed out, Kevin O'Brien is not that bad at writing prose (although if the character Linda said "Ye gods" once more, I was going to murder someone myself!) But the plot and characters are so hackneyed, cliched and flimsy, you know what will happen long before it does. And you won't care.
*** Minor spoilers ahead! ***
The worst sin is the unrealistic and unbelievable nature of events. Tim Sullivan is a cop but doesn't check out the person shadowing him? Someone wakes Tim trying to get into his motel room and he simply tells the maid to come back later, without checking the time or the door? Has the author ever read a police procedural or even seen a cop show on TV? Then there are the many convenient events (the branch falling was the most egregious) that totally suspend belief.
This is a ridiculous novel, more a romance than a crime story. If you're a lover of good crime fiction, stay clear. And if you loved this book, I encourage you to seek out more satisfying and accomplished authors such as George Pelecanos, Michael Connelly, James Lee Burke, T. Jefferson Parker and even John Sandford. Once you read these authours, Kevin O'Brien's stories will be Left for the Trash Man!

This book blew my mind in its ability to be bad. This is not a thriller or a suspense novel, it is a melodrama, a soap opera. Sure there are endless murders and bad guys who can be everywhere at all times and characters who just happen to always "sense" somebody there and enough use of deus ex machina to make you puke. Everytime a character is in trouble a branch falls, a wave comes, a bump in the road. Jeesh already. And alas, there is no mystery here...O'Brien forecasts everything in a narrative that could easily have been 100 pages less. I relented and gave it two stars over one because he can at least write decent prose, if a little too hung up on colloquialisms (ye gods).
