Product Description:
Winner of the Bram Stoker Award for Best First Novel

From a new master of horror comes an apocalyptic showdown between the residents of a secluded, rural town and the deadly evil that confronts them wherever they turn . . .

Evil Doesn't Die

The cozy little town of Pine Deep buried the horrors of its past a long time ago. Thirty years have gone by since the darkness descended and the Black Harvest began, a time when a serial killer sheared a bloody swath through the quiet Pennsylvania village. The evil that once coursed through Pine Deep has been replaced by cheerful tourists getting ready to enjoy the country's largest Halloween celebration in what is now called 'The Spookiest Town in America.'

It Just Grows Stronger

But then--a month before Halloween--it begins. Unspeakably desecrated bodies. Inexplicable insanity. And an ancient evil walking the streets, drawing in those who would fall to their own demons and seeking to shred the very soul of this quickly fracturing community. Yes, the residents of Pine Deep have drawn together and faced a killer before. But this time, evil has many faces--and the lust and will to rule the earth. This struggle will be epic.

Rated by buyers 5 out of 5 stars - Ghost Road Blues....Unbelievable!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I cannot begin to say how much I liked this book! The writing was very well done as well as the story. This is my very first book by Jonathan Maberry"
and I must say I cannot wait to get my hands on the second book in the trilogy, "Dead Man's Song" however....what is the deal with not being able to buy it anywhere without paying a fortune? I even bought the third book in the trilogy "Bad Moon Rising" and haven't read it yet because I am hoping to find the second book.
"Ghost Road Blues" is good enough to read by itself even if you don't read the others, this book is unbelievable!!

Rated by buyers 4 out of 5 stars - Cool, Creepy novel... Great start to a trilogy
"Ghost Road Blues" by Jonathan Maberry is a deserved Stoker award winner that will keep you turning pages and yearning to get it's sequel "Dead Man's Song" (which I have yet to read). This very first installment of the "Pine Deep Trilogy" tells the story of the grizzly events that occurred in this small town 30 years ago, how they destroyed the "killer" and the even bloodier return of evil.
Pine Deep, Pa seems like your pretty typical rural town 11 months out of the year, but in October it becomes the Halloween capital of the world and boasts the worlds scariest haunted hayride managed by our protagonist Malcolm Crowe. Everything seems to be going as planned until 3 convincts from Philadlephia on the run from a botched drug-bust end up in their town, which is ill-prepared for such events. This occurs in late September (I'm thinkning the subsequent two novels take us to Halloween)and seems to trigger events that will bring an evil far worse than the one they faced 30 years ago. Far worse than any evil known to man.
I have read countless "horror" novels and I always love to get my hands on a trilogy or series, this one ranks up there with the scareist and most thought-provoking. If you're a fan of said novels you will thouroughly enjoy this read as I had.

Rated by buyers 3 out of 5 stars - Gotta go against the crowd on this one
I'll probably get blasted for this review but I have to voice a dissenting opinion from the bulk of the reviews here. Let me very first say that this isn't a bad book, but I simply don't feel it warrants the ratings it is getting. I've read far too many horror books which are better and which I feel deserve four and five star reviews before this book. My mom had a copy of this book which I borrowed a few weeks ago. When I looked on Amazon I saw a slew of five star reviews for it and very, very few dissenting reviews. That's normally a sign of a very good book so I borrowed her copy and started reading. The book starts out well, and there is actually two excellent scenes in the beginning which jerk your chain hard. Then the book settles down....then it slows down.... then it kind of begins to drag. Truthfully I got to within 30 pages of the end and then I put it aside and didn't finish. Why? I realized that the book couldn't fit the conclusion in the subsequent 30 pages. It was obvious the story wasn't going to finish in this book. I went back to the website and discovered that this is the very first of a trilogy. The problem here is that, in my view, the book's pacing is all wrong and I was tired at the thought of having to read two more books to get to the conclusion.

Why is the pacing wrong? Mayberry sets out at a good pace and then falters along the way. Actually he doesn't so much as falter, as begin to insert more and more space between moments of dramatic tension. All the elements are there in this story. You have some whacked-out crazies, Evil vampire spirits, scary scenes, violent scenes, good people struggling against bad people, etc. but the tension didn't escalate at the end of the book, it slowed down, took a deep breath and obviously began to prepare for the sequel. This really threw me off and I didn't enjoy it.

The other problem I had was that the "Evil" spirit just didn't come off any nastier than humans. Frankly, one of the human characters seemed nastier and came with a bigger body count than the vampire spirit. The goal of the vampire spirit seems to be to wipe out the town. In an age of Hiroshima, Nagasaki, Dachau, Auschwitz and other modern horrors the goal of wiping out a town seems like small potatoes. With humans being so accomlished at horror all by themselves you'd think that supernatural Evil would try to set a new standard, yet it came across as something of an underachiever.

In all honesty my feeling at the end of the book was that it was OK but not worth the bother of investing enough time to read two more books. The characters never really developed into truly complex, three dimensional beings, the tension ratcheted down rather than up, and my feeling was that I had read much better, much scarier, and much more enjoyable books. I'd recommend John Dies at the End as an example of five star horror. The supernatural Evil in that one makes humans look like wanna-be evildoers and it is a tremendous book. Try that one and then tell me that Ghost Road Blues deserves the same rating; it doesn't. Or try Infected: A Novel for an example of almost palpably painful escalating tension and five star horror. So while this isn't a horrible book it does have flaws which make me reserve higher ratings for books that I feel are much better.

Rated by buyers 3 out of 5 stars - Buyer beware
Well, it took me awhile but I finally finished this book. First of all, it is the very first book in a series and it doesn't really say that anywhere on the cover so just be aware. Second, a lot of people gave this 5 stars. In fact, over 80% of the people who have rated this book gave it five stars. To me a 5 star book you just can't put down and it sucks you in immediately. Not this one. I like a good horror tale but this one really never got rolling. Some of the characters were "chilling" like Karl Rueger - a serial killer turned loose in a small town. I did like the hero "Crow" but quite a bit of the story never really came together. Too many story lines were left hanging, I guess to be resolved in the second book. Unfortunately I won't be reading that one. If you come across this book like I did, attracted by the high reviews, you might look elsewhere. I enjoyed "13 Bullets" and "99 Coffins" by Wellington, pts 1 and 2 of a modern vampire thriller. If you are into some creepy serial killer stuff, try "Shadow Man" by Cody McFayden and it's sequel, the title of which escapes me now. Those books, to me, were all so much better than this one. I was disappointed. This is the very first book in amazon with over an over 80% 5 star rating that has failed to live up to it for me. If your curious about what has lived up in my opinion so far, check out "Swan Song" by Robert McCammon, a story about survivors of a nuclear war and "Ender's Game" for you sci-fi fans.

Rated by buyers 4 out of 5 stars - Ghost Road Blues
Glad I gave it a try! I am pretty weary of reaching out and reading authors I don't know much about, and I have been disappointed with some of my recent attempts to do so. But this book didn't let me down one bit. It moved along at a rapid pace and truly kept me turning the pages to see what was about to happen next. The characters were enjoyable to read, which is something that either makes or breaks a book for me.

My only regret is that I did not get his second novel, Deadman's Song since I wanted to see if I liked this one first. Now I wish I had the second one to start on since they run back to back. So, if you are considering this book, go ahead and buy Deadman's Song while your at it.
