I enjoyed this book alot. If you like zombies, real characters that feel like the people you meet everyday, then this one is a good read. It is well written and the story moves fast. A great addition to the zombie literature out there and one of the best in my eyes, if for no other reason than because it was mass marketed and had better editing. If you like zombies get this book.

I've actually read Dead City two different times. It was a great read each time. The second time was a year later when I had ran out out books for my zombie fix and had exhausted new books to read. It was like re-watching a DVD movie you had liked.
Now, the aspect I like most about zombie fiction is the post apocalyptic aspect and I do prefer Romero type zombies. Another aspect I like about zombie lore is interesting characters and seeing how they survive.
Being careful not to give away the plot or ending, the action, Romero-type zombies and characters are all outstanding. The story is from the perspective of a cop very first responding to a call where he very first encounters zombies and then spends the rest of the evening trying to survive while trying to find his family in a city that is quickly overrun by zombies. The action is non-stop, very descriptive and believable. The cop encounters other very interesting characters... among them is a "zombie geek" who was into discussing zombie mythology in online blogs prior to attack. That was a nice touch... it seemed this author had found a creative and workable way to play homage and give voice to the hardcore zombie fans out there without having abstract philosophical passages. Well done! And those philosophical point were completely but shortly stated and not heavy handed... one thing I've seen done poorly in other books.
Again, without giving anything away, the ending was non-traditional to zombie lore. But that didn't hurt the story. In fact, it even gave an element of plausibility to a genre that we know wouldn't ever happen but are fascinated by nevertheless. I would think that even those who didn't agree with that approach wouldn't have been terribly disappointed as the book had just given you one hell of a ride.
The story takes place over one night... but what a night it is. It did capture the sense of danger and "no where to go" feeling of any good zombie story. I cared about the characters. Even the secondary characters were colorful and well drawn.
Something for everyone... gore and action on one level, and room for thought or reflection for those who are so inclined.
I hope this author writes another zombie novel. I'll be among the very first in line to get it.

The book started out pretty well, and was a lot of fun for 150 pages or more - good horror, good realistic loss of companions and so forth. Action movie grade realism. Then, in the last quarter of the book - all logic fell apart. The hero starts making no sense at all and almost everything becomes very far-fetched and inconsistent.
The last 50 pages or so are awful - but it was a fun ride for a while, and I wanted to acknowledge that.

Joe McKinney does a creditable job in writing a thrilling story with a time-worn cast of characters. Anyone who's ever seen George Romero's "Night of the Living Dead" knows the story line. The action is predictable: Protagonist(s) run and hide from re-vivified dead people who are hungry for human flesh. "Normal" people engage in horrific and bloody slaughter of dead people, with plenty of attendant gore and slimy intestines hanging from mutilated bodies that refuse to fall over and be still. And yet, McKinney kept my interest throughout this cheap little thrill ride.
"Dead City" was a refreshing break in some of the pithier tomes I've slogged through recently. I liken it to an afternoon between-meal snack of unhealthy - but gratifying - food.
