I plan to review only what I like the best or the least----and this is one of the best ever.
I was hooked from the very first page and found myself wanting to play hooky so I could go read. Scalzi must have a heck of a college degree becuz he anticipated tiny details of what life might be like 200 years from now. And you just gotta love the characters. You didn't want any of them to die, they were written so good.
The main guy is 75 when he joins the colonial forces and we follow him through the process of getting a new body and training. Then we follow him and his freinds into the far vaster universe than we ever imagined. It is great and will appeal to readers of every age becuz the interactions are so human and real.
I felt about this book, the same way I felt about FOUNDATION and LORD OF THE RINGS. It is that good!

I picked up a copy of "Old Man's War" last month and added it to a pile of books I intended to read before Christmas, needless to say one I started this fantastic tale I coudn't put it down. This one one great read, not a classic like Dune or LOTR, but OMW is one of those kinds of books that just grabs you and won't let go. Very well written with great, realistic characters and a story that could be all to real in our future.
A great mix of comedy, realism, and combat action, all from the perspective of an old man in a young mans body. I'm not usually sorry to reach the end of a book but with OMW I was left wanting more. Highly recomended.

The author creates great characters that evoke Heinlein's classic heros, but he does the old master one better. The action is even faster paced and the twists and turns in the plot are fantastic.
Imagine an army of grandfathers and grandmothers? Crazy? Not in Scalzi's hands. They manage to save the human race from not one race of space aliens but many. A great read. I could not put it down!

No, I haven't read it. I bought the audible version and was blown away! Now i love to read, but some books are just better when well read in audiobook format. I've read books then purchased the audio version and let me tell you, when it's good it's great! This was an outstanding audiobook, the narration was superb and the characters really came to life. There are some books that are ruined by bad narrators, and even more that are enhanced, this one has been played so many times that my mp3 player groans in disgust. I drive for a living so audiobooks are an important staple for me, with a library of over four hundred titles i have multiple ipods in service, this book is on each.
If you've already read the book, try it at audible. It's an addictive habit.

If you have not read Starship Troopers or saw the movie, you will probably enjoy the book more. The book was well written and interesting anyway. I am debating whether to read the subsequent book in the series. I wonder why science fiction writers do not change the basic human motivations and reactions in their characters a little more. Would such a book be very boring for the reader? I was always a fan of Mr. Spock of Star Trek. Does human evolution stop in the future?
