Rated by buyers 4 out of 5 stars - Murder for Christmas
It is the OFF SEASON on Martha's Vineyard, the tourists are gone and the locals take over for murder and mayhem. Who is shooting at who is the question as hunters and protectors square off for a festive season?
J.W. Jackson is in the thick of things as he ponders the perfect gift for his lady love and enjoys the peace of the season until an acquaintance turns up dead in a hidden sex nest. J.W. takes on the nasty job of finding the ladies whose indescrestions were recorded on film and the ladies are not helpful.

Rated by buyers 5 out of 5 stars - Nice little read
This book held my interest from the start, it's not a page turner, however, it is a nice read.

Rated by buyers 4 out of 5 stars - Great atmosphere
The best part of Craig's Martha's Vineyard series is the atmosphere. Detecting the murderer is about average. The character depictions are a bit better than average. But the descriptions of the island's beaches and backways are truly fine. I've never been to Martha's Vineyard, although I feel as if I have through this series.

In most of the other volumes, we see the island only in its summer glory, with tourists abounding, Living in a resort town, as I do, it feels exactly right. But in this book, we see the place in its off season, and that feels right as well. There's something sad about a resort town in winter, with restaurants, cottages and inns closed, and with year-arounders disputing with each other because there's not much else to do. In this book the hunters and vegetarians are at odds, and then one of them gets killed with an arrow in the chest. J.W., narrator, retired cop, fisherman, cook, is hired to find the killer.

The only part that puzzles me is the author's apparent desire to promote gun ownership. Somehow it never feels quite right. I'm not opposed to characters in fiction promoting causes, but in Craig's case, it feels as if the author stops in front of the character at times and makes the case.

Still, this is one of the better books in the series and I'd recommend it to any reader of crime novels in the semi-cozy genre, complete with recipes.

Rated by buyers 5 out of 5 stars - great winter cozy in Martha's Vineyard
This book has animal rights protestors vs hunters, a gangster connection, a shady politician, sexual peccadillos, romance among a widow and widower, and kittens. Snow is falling all over the island during Christmas season, and Nash Cortez is stirring up trouble with the animal rights protectors. Later, a dead body is found, and our hero is hired by the girlfriend of the deceased to find the killer. He warns her, she might not like what he finds... a premonition of what is to come. This book was full of enjoyable aspects, and every chapter was a pleasure to read. As with all of Philip Craig's books, you will work up an appetite salivating over the food descriptions too. Thumbs up!

Rated by buyers 4 out of 5 stars - Off Season
I always enjoy Philip Craig's writing. His characters are real to life and fun to get to know. I have read almost everything about J.W., Zee and the kids. Also enjoy his collaboration with William Tapply. I like the way the characters age from book to book. First, just dating, then married, the children arrive and we get to watch them grow. It is like having very nice neighbors subsequent door. The introducing of the recipes is great too and I have tried some of them and they are as good as they sound in the books. Fishing will never be a hobby of mine but J.W.(via Philip Craig) makes it really sound like fun. Shall look forward to many more books in the future.
