Editor's Notes and Comments:

Product Description:
Kate Shugak, a private investigator, has been working on a case for the Anchorage District Attorney involving the murder of a young woman by her husband, a man named Louis Deem. Deem has been the subject of investigations before, and he’s never been convicted of a crime. But Kate and her on-again, off-again lover, state trooper Jim Chopin, who arrested Deem, are convinced that this time it’s different—and he’ll finally be punished for his actions.

When the jury returns a verdict of not guilty, Kate, Jim, and citizens of Niniltna, Alaska, believe Deem has gotten away with murder. And when, a few weeks later, two people turn up dead after an apparent robbery, Kate and Jim can’t help but believe that Deem is involved…but what it takes to bring Deem to justice could tear them apart—if the real killer doesn’t get to them first.

Rated by buyers 5 out of 5 stars - dana stabenow
I have read most of Dana Stabenows books and when ever I see a new one I am anxious to get it. Then I can loan it and share it with friends. This one was as good as all her others. Love the character of kate shugak Theresa

Rated by buyers 4 out of 5 stars - I'm bemused by the ending
SPOILER

I agree with other readers that this volume is a bit "thin," but I'm mostly bemused by the ending. If I've got it right, there were seven co-conspirators (well, six at least) in on the last murder. And Kate didn't figure it out - at least not all of it! Isn't she supposed to be the heroine/detective?

A Deeper Sleep: A Kate Shugak Novel (Kate Shugak Novels)
Ms Stabenow keeps writing better novels with each new one. This is a difficult story, with no perfect solution. What in life has perfect solutions?

Rated by buyers 5 out of 5 stars - Another Excellent Story
I love all of books in this series from the very very first one to this latest one. Kate is a strong person and I enjoy reading about life in Alaska. Never once have I been disappointed in Kate or the people in the park. Dana Stabenow writes wonderful stories and I have a hard time between Kate Shugak adventures.

Rated by buyers 2 out of 5 stars - Deeply Disappointing
I should mention from the start that I am a first-time reader of Dana Stabenow's books, and I understand from other customer reviews that it might be helpful in this series to 'start at the beginning' in order to get a better feel for the characters and context.

However, I don't plan to read any more books by this author. Why? Because when I read (or listen on CD) to a thriller, I want it to capture my emotions. What I want as a reader is to be taken away.

This book offered long analytical observations, when I was hoping for animated dialogue. The descriptions of Alaska, rather than being artfully woven into the story, felt like a travel book.

My hopes were high at the beginning. I felt myself caring for the victim of domestic violence, cowering in her bed and being forced to go out in the cold to fetch water to make coffee for her brute of a husband.

But suddenly, it shifted to two characters (Kate and Jim) making out. I could not force myself to care about either of these characters. Even their lovemaking was written in past tense. It lacked passion and was overly analytical. The dishwashing scene had me rolling my eyes.

As I listened to this book (on CD), I became increasingly frustrated that this story could not transport me... so I gave up on it halfway through.
