Rated by buyers 5 out of 5 stars - Shakespeare's Secret
If you think that this book is just going to be a boring old book about Shakespeare, you are wrong.

A girl solves her very first mystery by finding an old jewel and necklace that were originally discovered in the 1800's. After reading this book, I am sure that the main character, Hero, will solve more mysteries and will be in more books. I would recommend this book to any book lover and I cannot wait for another book like this. I have read lots of mystery books and so far this is my favorite!

Rated by buyers 4 out of 5 stars - Great fiction, not just limited to the middle school age group
Without giving away any secrets, Hero Netherfield is an introverted twelve-year-old who is miserable at the thought of having to start new at yet another school. With her quiet, withdrawn personality and odd Shakespearian name, she's never been popular, and oftentimes the butt of jokes and teasing. Sure enough, Hero's days at school are no different from any other time, but this time her afternoons are spent with Mrs. Roth, the elderly lady subsequent door, who meets Hero shortly before school begins. The two become fast friends, and Mrs. Roth confides in Hero the strange story of a police investigation involving the former owner of the Netherfields' house, and a mysterious diamond that has never been found. Hero and Mrs. Roth determine to recover the diamond, with the unlikely aid of cool, easygoing Danny Cordova, eighth-grade heartthrob, who seems determined to become Hero's friend.

As a sixteen-year-old high schooler, I was surprised at how much I liked this book. It was well-written and fast-paced, with characters who are easy to relate to and care about. It's not a chilling murder mystery or a race-the-clock thriller, but it's an exciting mystery with a literary twist, the type of book where you learn without realizing it until it's too late. The book is geared towards the middle school age range, I think, and is appropriate for that age range (however, there is mention of illegitimate children), but not limited to it. Older kids who enjoy a good lighthearted mystery would enjoy this book also. Throwing in bits of classical poetry and Shakespearian history quite painlessly, Ms. Broach does a great job of making her reader want to know more of the unusual "history mystery" written into the plot. All in all, I found myself really caring about Hero, Danny, and Mrs. Roth, wanting to know what happened to them, and grabbing every available opportunity to read a few more chapters.

Rated by buyers 4 out of 5 stars - Shakespeare's Secret
Shakespeare's Secret by Elise Broach is about a girl named Hero Netherfield. When Hero meets an old woman named Mrs. Roth, who has many stories to share, Hero learns that she lives in a house that possibly has a diamond hidden in it. The missing diamond belongs to a 500-year old necklace, with a mystery dating back to the time of William Shakespeare. This book is exciting and surprising. I loved it!

After hearing of this missing diamond, Hero and her new friend Danny are on a hunt to solve the Murphy Diamond mystery. With Mrs. Roth's help, Hero and Danny learn more about the history of William Shakespeare.

I liked this book because it occurred in the modern time and the characters are very real. Shakespeare's Secret is a great mystery!

Rated by buyers 5 out of 5 stars - JiTTeRbOx895's Review!
So, I picked up this book at my local library and it was so good! I read it almost two years ago and back then my reading level was a little bit better than a monkey, so this book is fairly easy to read. But that never takes away from the great thrill that it gives you to read it since it IS a mystery! Basically, we are taken into the Netherfield family's new home to be introduced to Hero. Hero is always the second prettiest in her family subsequent to her older sister Beatrice. But this doesn't matter, she doesn't care about her looks. Hero is asked to take something over to their subsequent door neighbor's house where she meets Mrs. Roth who is an old widowed woman that tells her old stories about the previous owner of Hero's house. Mrs. Roth tells her the infamous story about the missing Murphy diamond hidden somewhere in the Netherfiled's house.
Since we know that Hero and Beatrice are named after characters in Shakespeare's play "Much Ado About Nothing", we also know that other facts about Shakespeare will pop up along the story line.
Hero makes friends with one of the most popular middle school boys possible. Danny is let in on some unknown facts about the location of the hidden diamond, and soon Hero and Danny are setting off to find it.
During this story, I was into it so much that I read it in about one night. So read it people! The worst that will happen is that you put it down (yea right!) and stop reading it! Just give it a shot.
I hope you enjoyed this review and check out all my others!
