Product Description:

Cranky but lovable sleuth Agatha Raisin’s detective agency has become so successful that she wants nothing more than to take quality time for rest and relaxation. But as soon as she begins closing the agency on weekends, she remembers that when she has plenty of quality time, she doesn’t know what to do with it. So it doesn’t take much for the vicar of a nearby village to persuade her to help publicize the church fete---especially when the fair’s organizer, George Selby, turns out to be a gorgeous widower.

Agatha brings out the crowds for the fete, all right, but there’s more going on than innocent village fun. Several of the offerings in the jam-tasting booth turn out to be poisoned, and the festive family event becomes the scene of two murders.

Along with her young and (much to her dismay) pretty sidekick, Toni, Agatha must uncover the truth behind the jam tampering, keep the church funds safe from theft, and expose the nasty secrets lurking in the village---all while falling for handsome George, who may have secrets of his own.

Rated by buyers 4 out of 5 stars - A Spoonful of Poison
This is the 19th in the Agatha Raisin series and I'm always delighted when a new book comes out. These cozies are a special treat to read on a blustery winter day. Agatha's latest adventure involves organizing publicity for a church fete where the jam has been laced with a poison or a hallucinogenic drug, proceeds from the fete are stolen, and there are suspicious deaths and one murder to solve. Agatha is becoming less cranky and more lovable. There are also complications in her personal life. The ending makes us look forward to book #20.

Another great Agatha Raisin book. I so enjoy reading all about this mid 50 character. I almost feel like I'm living subsequent door to her. All I have to say to Aggie, some day your prince will come, in the mean time, keep up the good work at your agency.

Rated by buyers 5 out of 5 stars - A SPOONFUL OF POISON
Love Agatha Raisin-the gal who allows all of us over - 50's who are less than perfect, live vicariously through her exploits. Terrific fun!

Rated by buyers 5 out of 5 stars - Simply defines the British cozy
What more charming setting could there be than a tiny stone village in the heart of the English Cotswolds? M. C. Beaton has a winning recipe when she adds in amateur sleuth Agatha Raisin and her supporting staff of old friends, current employees and hopefully a future beau. Nothing slows Agatha Raisin down when it comes to romance.

"Agatha's Perception of beauty....was prompted by her hormones. If only Agatha hadn't seen that handsome man..."

When Agatha is approached to handle a bit of public relations for a neighboring town's annual church fete, she decisively says no --- until she catches sight of George Selby. Then she quickly changes her mind. Despite the fact that business at her detective agency is overly brisk, she is about to let a handsome man add to her already hectic schedule. Hoping to be looked at as more than a PR person by this green-eyed bachelor, Agatha jumps in with enthusiasm and a head full of wonderful ideas to make this year's fundraiser at St. Odo the Severe in Comfrey Magna something to remember. In that goal, she is successful. Someone laced several jars of jam entered in the local competition, which causes a couple of deaths and a number of very sick attendees. Now Agatha's detective agency has a new case: catch the killer.

Keeping George in her crosshairs, Agatha enlists the aid of her youngest detective, Toni, to help her track down the person who poisoned the church fete jam. She soon finds that there is no shortage of suspects. Several of the town's women seem to have plausible motives, including winning the affections of George Selby. The little hamlet of Comfrey Magna has more secrets than it has citizens, and Agatha exposes a few that put her in grave danger. It appears possible that the killer has struck again when one of the ladies who Agatha and Toni interviewed ends up dead in what looks like a suicide. But is it?

Before the tragedy that ruined the village celebration, the church had raked in much more than it had in past years, a large enough sum that the vicar worries where to put it for safe keeping. Trouble follows the money, and Agatha ends up with even more on her hands. Now she needs to find the killer and the missing loot.

Meanwhile, the cast of characters grows. Sir Charles Fraith, whom Agatha blithely overlooks as a serious candidate for romance, drops in on her now and then, occasionally spending the night at her home. He may have even saved her life this time. At the very least, he saved her some embarrassment. An ex-employee of the agency, Jimmy, takes an interest in pretty young Toni, causing her some uncomfortable moments. And a few others weave themselves in and out of the story to complicate Agatha's days and her solving of the mystery.

A SPOONFUL OF POISON simply defines the British cozy. As the tension ratchets up, so does the love interest level. And along the way, readers are treated to a glimpse of the quaint countryside that comprises the beautiful Cotswolds. It doesn't get much better than that.

Rated by buyers 2 out of 5 stars - Same Ole, Same Ole
Some novelists and series one likes simply because of innovative narrative, haunting characters, and the beautiful usage of the English language. Then there are novelists and series one reads simply out of habit; MC Beaton and her Agatha Raisin novels fall into the latter category. Approximately 18 novels into the series, and Agatha is firmly a one-note character starring in a one-note series. Perhaps author Beaton has sensed this because the past five Raisin novels or so have featured dabblings into the darker psychological thriller genre, but with decidedly tepid results.

It may be noted this review does not touch upon the narrative of "A Spoon ful of Poison." Suffice it to say, there was a spoonful narrative, spoonful of plot and a spoonful of characterization. Our dear Agatha needs a new and improved recipe -- quick!
