Product Description:
On Christmas Eve seventeen years ago, Morgan Winter was traumatized by the discovery of her parents' brutally murdered bodies in a Brooklyn basement. When shocking new evidence overturns the killer's conviction, Morgan is forced to face the horrifying realization that the real killer is still out there.
Trapped between past nightmares and present danger, she hires Pete Montgomery, the former NYPD detective who once promised the helpless young Morgan that he'd find her parents' killer. With nothing more than an old case file and crime scene photos, Monty enlists the specialized skills of his son, Lane, a photojournalist who performs covert image analysis for the CIA. In a cruel twist of fate, they expose the devastating secrets of the dark past, only to discover that while the dead may be buried, danger lives on . . .

Solving the mystery in this novel depended too much on coincidences. Some were down right ludricious. The book takes place in New York City - not East Podunk. How many millions of people live there? Yet time and again, the folks in this book ran into one another. They all knew one another. Every person in the book sounded the same - zero deviation. I wanted someone to please give "poor Morgan" a vitimin. Yes, it's tough to lose one's parents BUT - it had been 17 friggin' years AND she'd apparently been under a head doctor's care all that time! Oy, if I read one more time that she was "exhausted" and "hanging by a thread" I was about to shot myself! And, like another reviewer I knew early in the book who the killer was - it was SO obvious.
What else? The book was far too long - I skipped huge chunks just to get to the end. I knew who the killer was - wanted to find out the way. If you HAVE to read this tedious, silly book - get it from the library.

My second Kane book. I liked this one as well. Good story line and keeps you guessing.

Pete Montgomery, a retired NYPD detective, faces one of the most difficult cases of his life - telling a woman that the man who was convicted of killing her parents when she was a child was innocent of that crime. Morgan Hunter, now a grown and sophisticated woman who is still struggling to deal with the trauma of discovering her parents' bloody bodies, is outraged to find that the killer is still on the loose. Morgan pursues the case despite its history by hiring Montgomery, now a private detective, not knowing that by doing so she's brought a lot more to the case than just new perspective.
Lane Montgomery, Pete's son, is an internationally known photojournalist whose fame envelops covert skills that few know he has. When Morgan hired Pete, she also hired Lane and his magnificently expensive photography lab, which Pete puts to use with the old negatives from the crime scene. Having Morgan's legal guardian, Congressman Shore, behind the scenes helped tremendously in getting through the blue tape, but at times it seemed more of a hindrance than a help.
Morgan tries to make it through the holiday season with her upscale matchmaking firm that she has started with her foster sister, the Congressman's daughter Jill, but murder and mayhem just keep getting in the way. Family members seem to fear for Morgan's emotional and mental fragility, but it seemed to be hyped up a lot more than in the character's make up.
Honestly, I found it hard to get into the multiple plots in the story. I did figure out the basic bad guy routine in the very first chapter, which is pretty bad even for me. I thought there were a lot of leaps in logic - or pieces that didn't fit even remotely - and that kind of ruined it for me in trying to keep the rest of the story together. I guess the only part I did like was that the romance part of it never wavered. Morgan and Lane never doubted each other. The story crashed around them, like waves ebbing, swirling, and flowing, but their feelings, though brought on quickly, were like the strong under-tow beneath it all.
So I'm not sure who I would recommend to read this - there is some suspense and some surprises in the story, but I got too hung up on discrepancies to enjoy them.

Dark Room is a suspenseful page turner by Andrea Kane. The protagonist, Morgan Winters, was indelibly marked because 17 years ago, she discovered the bodies of her parents when she was just eleven years old. She has moved on and become a successful entrepreneur, thanks to the loving support of her adopted family and a great deal of therapy. That is all put in jeopardy when it is learned that the person who had confessed to the crime, didn't commit the murders. The killer is still out there.
Pete Montgomery is the retired cop who was never quite satisfied with the confession. Now he is a private investigator and more determined than ever to find the killer so Morgan can rest easy. Unfortunately digging into the past has a price. The price this time is threats to the family that raised Morgan after the murders. The more they dig, the scarier it gets.
The only upside to the situation is Pete's son Lane, who as photographer and analyst for the CIA has skills the investigation desperately needs. The sparks fly between him and Morgan, and as the investigation gets closer to its conclusion, the pair finds themselves charting new territory.
Andrea Kane gives us a terrific story populated by characters that are believable and lovable. There are no cardboard cutouts here. Even the people on the fringes of the story are given strengths and foibles that make them well-rounded and human. I found the story interesting, but the real interest was in how these people interacted with each other and forced each other to grow. In the end the dark room isn't the lab where the photos are developed, but the room inside of each of us that holds our worst fears. Kane gives us a glimpse into that room.

Morgan Winter had been a ten-year-old girl when her parents, Lara and Jack, were murdered. It happened on Christmas Eve. Morgan found the bodies. During the trauma, only one man could reach the child, Detective Pete "Monty" Montgomery. Monty was the lead detective in the case. When Schiller confessed to the Winters' double homicide, the case was closed. Yet Monty never fully believed Schiller was the person that killed the Winters.
Little Morgan had been taken in and raised by her parents' closest friends, the Shores. Congressman Arthur Shore and his wife, Elyse, treated Morgan as if she was one of their own. Surrounded by the Shores and their children, along with many therapy sessions, Morgan got through the trauma. However, as the holidays approached each year, Morgan dealt with graphic nightmares.
Seventeen years later...
Morgan Winter still considers the Shores to be her second family. She operates an elite boutique social agency called Winshore LLC. Morgan's partner and dearest friend is Jill Shore. Jill, with all her perkiness, is dealing with various holiday decorations and meetings. Morgan is dealing with finding possible matches for clients, when Monty shows up at her door with horrible news: Schiller was not her parents' real killer. The real murderer is still out there and possibly killing more. Even though Monty "retired" five years ago, he is now a private investigator. Morgan hires him on the spot. Jack Winter had been an A.D.A. In fact, he had been the D.A. Office's golden boy. With Jack's golden boy history, Arthur pulling some strong strings, and Monty personally on the case, Morgan has no doubt that the real killer will be found this time around. Problem is that the real killer is not only still out there, but has been watching Morgan since the night of the double homicide, making sure that a dark secret is never revealed. As Morgan and her circle begin to find answers, the killer must convince her to stop searching.
***** There are other major and secondary characters that I do not mention in my synopsis. Since Jack was a prosecutor that had put away many well-connected criminals, he had many enemies. Therefore, the list of suspects is immense. This novel will test your wits as you hang on to every word and analyze every suspect. Lots of drama and tension, yet with a light touch of romance. I expect to find this title on the NY Best Selling list quickly! *****
