Well, I really enjoyed Black Order, so I gave this a try and was disappointed. It has a lot of excitement and suspense, but in the end, it just feels too "oh give me a break, how could that happen?" unrealistic.
WAY too many impossible scenarios are resolved WAY too easily. If only real life was this easy to get out of a bad situation.

There's a virus threatening to eradicate most, if not all, of mankind, and only one woman can stop it; however, capturing and securing this woman is no easy task. There are historians and scientists, alike, attempting to apprehend the possible "cure" for the virus. Action and adventure abound on both sides! On the one side, you have Sigma Force ("the good guys"), and on the other, you have Amen Nasser and Detesh Panjali (sp?) also known as "the bad guys." Who will be the very first to capture her, and will they do so before it's too late?
The Judas Strain by James Rollins takes you on the historical and scientific trail of Marco Polo and the mysteries he left concealed. The novel starts off with Marco Polo and "all the king's men", and a gruesome discovery (and subsequently, decision) made in the 1600s. Fast forward to present day Christmas Island, where a toxic virus has bloomed from the seas. There's so much to tell, but I fear I'll tell it all if I keep typing.
Just... imagine the movies Outbreak, Pirates of the Caribbean, and Silence of the Lambs multiplied by one hundred, and you have The Judas Strain. I highly enjoyed (and recommend) this novel for the historical and scientific information therein, as well as the plot and the characters (my favorite was Commander Pierce). Talk about interesting. For example, I didn't know that some species of squid use spectacular lights to communicate with other squids. Now, if you're in the ocean, and you see some lights seemingly coming from nowhere, SWIM AWAY! That was the message I took from the squid ordeal.
Whatever you imagine to the epitome of those three aforementioned movies, that's what this book delivers. If you're into action, there's plenty of that. If you're looking for information, there's plenty of that. If you're into whodunits, there's plenty of that. If you're into the whole good versus evil, there's plenty of that. If you're into the many different religions, there's plenty of that. You name it, this book has it! The Judas Strain was the very first novel I'd read by James Rollin, but I do believe I'll enjoy reading more of his books. Overall, on a scale of 1 to 5, I would give this book a 4 to 4 1/2. It was just that good!

Rollins have a knack to come up with interesting plots, and then he screws it up by introducing Clive Custler type characters (Dirk Pitt wannabes). However, the intrigue is good and seems plausable and the book is entertaining. Just replace the main characters with something more believable, and it would be a great read.

I Picked this book up at the airport on a 4 hour delay and enjoyed every minute of it. The plot is interesting and pulls you in but goes a little off coarse by the end of the book. I would recommend this book to anybody that likes a good thriller novel with the caveat that they are going to have to make an effort to suspend their disbelief at the end.

Although I found this book enjoyable overall, it was a struggle to read at times. As a James Rollins & Sigma Force fan, I was a little disappointed because there were several times I felt stalled and disinterested. Although this is not one of my personal favorites, I will still recommend this book to my friends because Rollins is a good author whose work should be enjoyed.
