Product Description:
After nine months on the road, Maxie McNabb is ready for some R&R, Alaska-style, with her miniature dachshund, Stretch. But no sooner has the sixty-something RVer parked the Mini-Winnie than a pleading phone call sends her flying to Hawaii. Because Karen Bailey, hobbled by an accident, needs Maxie's help packing up her house.
But within hours of Maxie's arrival, a prowler tries to break in and someone sabotages the plumbing. And when she hears Karen whispering into the phone-don't call here...I'll call you when it's safe, when she's...-Maxie suspects that Karen is hiding something. Far from home and no longer behind the wheel, Maxie feels as though the ice is melting around her.

A very first time reader of this author and I picked up one that talks about Hilo, Pahoa, Puna, Volcanoes etc. Good storyline and a quick read for those who like the light side of mysteries.

I finally gave up on the last 30 pages and just skimread.
There is way too much description -- of Hawaii but also Alaska and Canada -- and very little in the way of mystery, plot, character development, etc. We heard all about a grocery-shopping expedition to a Hawaiian supermarket, where, we learned, you can get really fresh fruit and don't have to go to a separate store to buy hard liquor. We hear about every meal prepared and eaten. We hear descriptions of flowers and birds, of volcanos, of travels in an RV, and personal opinions (voiced more than once) about gun ownership.l Mostly, we hear about Hawaii -- flora & fauna, tourist attractions, etc.
I read mysteries because I like mysteries -- I like plots, and a quick pace. If I wanted to read about Hawaii, I'd buy a book about Hawaii. I heard so much about Jameson Irish whisky that I wondered if I was encountering product placement -- that Jameson was giving Henry a couple of crates of whisky for every mention in this book. (In fact, there were so many "plugs" in this book I wondered if the whole book was just one big product placement, with the author receiving all sorts of goodies for mentioning mysteries by other authors, dinner cruises -- by name and location -- that one could take in Hawaii, etc.)
Motives aside, how much do we need to hear about how our heroine likes to sit down with a glass of Jameson in the evening? Or that her RV has a special hidden compartment for a shotgun? Or that the house in Alaska has a fabulous view? Each statement gets repeated over and over and over again.
I think the only reason this book was published was because Sue Henry has such a strong following. Otherwise, an editor would have insisted on cutting out all these redundant and/or irrelevant passages.
It is also difficult to fathom that someone would travel from Alaska to Hawaii at the drop of a hat to pack the belongings of an acquaintance who is not particularly well-liked. The acquaintance has a broken foot, but she also has the resources to pay someone to do this, and it would probably be a lot cheaper than air fare from Alaska to Hawaii (no mention is made of who is picking up the tab!) And yet this is the premise to this book that the reader is supposed to accept.
This is the second in this series that I've read, but I've read a number of the Alaska series, which I greatly prefer. I don't think I'll be reading in this series, but I'll probably continue to read the Alaska mysteries.

Sue Henry has written another wonderful mystery. I read this book in two days and then wished there was more. I am eagerly waiting her subsequent book.

Love these books, just missed Stretch in this one. Spent 6 months driving a small RV across country seeing friends and many interesting places, had a wonderful time. But never want to ever drive one again. Was much the same age as Maxine

We join Maxie for the 3rd time on an adventure, although we don't get to spend too much time with her favorite mini-dachshund Stretch. Maxie has flown to Hawaii to help a friend she grew up with, Karen, who's broken her wrist and ankle, but is trying to move back to Alaska. Although Maxie would like nothing better than to return to Homer, Alaska, and Stretch, she promised Karen she would help pack up and ship her belongings since she was not able to do so alone. However, Karen has become quite secretive since Maxie's arrival, and Maxie is sure someone tried to break in during the night. When forced to call a plumber for a backed up drain that is no accident, Maxie discovers that someone wants Karen out of that house - and is up to no good to get what they want.
Maxie regrets, almost immediately, her decision to fly to Hawaii, but has decided to make the best of it and get the favor done quickly, but not without enjoying some of the tropical gardens and sights of the islands. She happens upon the plumber's assistant, Jerry, while at a garden, and hires the runaway 18 year old (originally from Anchorage) to help her pack, in exchange for a flight back to Alaska.
After yet another run-in with Karen, and then her disagreeable landlord, Maxie manages to get Karen out of the picture by shipping her home to Alaska with the promise to take care of everything while Karen recuperates from her injuries back in their hometown. Maxie and Jerry are able to get everything sorted and packed in short order, and are set up for the garage sale when they find the house broken into and their packing job demolished. Unsure of what the burglars wanted, they secure the house after reporting the break-in, and repack everything. After shipping everything off, Maxie and Jerry rent a camper and travel the island, seeing the tropical sights Maxie has chosen to enjoy before heading back to her home of icebergs and pine trees. When Jerry is kidnapped, Maxie decides that she must unearth the clues to the mysterious events surrounding her if she is to save the life of her new friend - and herself.
I unfortunately missed The Tooth of Time, the second in this series of a senior woman and her dog with a serious wanderlust whose home base is Alaska. I plan to remedy that shortly, but I really enjoy Henry's depictions of the areas around her stories. They encourage me to travel and see many of these sights for myself, and to enjoy what is around me. While there is a lot of action in the story, there is a minimum of violence for those who do not care for it. I recommend this novel for those who like adventure and travel, and especially for those armchair travelers. I also think those who enjoy Henry's other series featuring musher Jessie Arnold would like the interaction between Henry's two protagonists - as they become closer friends as the stories progress.
