Product Description:
A new Maisie Dobbs novel from award-winning author Jacqueline Winspear

In the third novel of this unique and masterly crime series, a deathbed plea from his wife leads Sir Cecil Lawton, KC, to seek the aid of Maisie Dobbs, psychologist and investigator. As Maisie soon learns, Agnes Lawton never accepted that her aviator son was killed in the Great War, a torment that led her not only to the edge of madness but also to the doors of those who practice the dark arts and commune with the spirit world. Determined to prove Ralph Lawton either dead or alive, Maisie is plunged into a case that tests her spiritual strength, as well as her regard for her mentor, Maurice Blanche. The mission will bring her to France and reunite her with her old friend Priscilla Evernden, who lost three brothers in the war, one of whom has an intriguing connection to the case.

Set against a finely drawn portrait of life between the World Wars, Pardonable Lies is 'a thrilling mystery that will enthrall fans of Jacqueline Winspear's heroine and likely win her new ones' (Detroit Free Press).

Rated by buyers 1 out of 5 stars - Confusing
I had not read a book by this author before but "Pardonable Lies" was recommended to me. I found this book hard to follow. I kept getting the characters confused for the most part. There was too much misc. info. surrounding the plot. I will not buy another novel by this author. Very disappointed. The characters came and went with little to remind you of where you had read about them before. Will not recommend.

Rated by buyers 5 out of 5 stars - As the Hippocratic Oath of physicians says, "Do no harm."
Pardonable Lies is one of the Maise Dobbs series by Jacqueline Winspear, and the third I've read. The lady has a remarkable ability to put across the period of World War I and its aftermath for a reader and has inspired me to actually find out more about the history of that era, one I thought of as "boring" before reading these novels.

Ms Winspear has a remarkable understanding of people and their motives, and it becomes clearer with each book I read. Certainly her account of individuals recovering from their traumatic experiences during the war was very sensitive and realistic. Here the very fact that so much of what happens to people in war is undisclosed, even after the war and often to the detriment of many families, is very evident and probably still goes on in our own times. The fact that some things are best left unsaid for the well-being of those involved is also provocative. (As the Hippocratic Oath of physicians says, "Do no harm.")

The book is extremely well plotted, with no loose ends, despite being fairly complicated and multilayered in its design, something I find remarkable.

Rated by buyers 4 out of 5 stars - a great new to me author
I'm a great mystery fan and read my favorite authors over and over, unfortunately many of my favorite authors are slowing down or, as far as I can tell, have retired or died, it is very hard to find replacements and some like Ellis Peters are ireplaceqble, Jacqueline Winspear fits the bill. I find her writing style enjoyable and I particularly enjoy her use of psychology and empathy to solve her mysteries. And in spite of her apparent use of ESP these books have a reality and ring of truth. Can't wait to raad more

Rated by buyers 5 out of 5 stars - Outstanding Cozy
Another in this beautiful series about life in post WWI England and a likeable, human female sleuth. These books are literature-quality cozies in the best tradition of the genre.

Rated by buyers 4 out of 5 stars - Maisie Dobbs: History and Mystery
For those of us who enjoy a historical novels as well as a little mystery, the Maisie Dobbs series has all parts covered. This book in the series takes us on a more personal view of Maisie as she confronts her past demons from WW1 while chasing her clients' demons.

Jacqueline Winspear does a wonderful job of creating a believable, and accurate, world in which Maisie exists as an independent female detective. Maisie's life is one of meditation, patience, facts and practicality rather than romance and intrigue. However, her problems as well as her clients problems are surprisingly modern in nature. A must-read for mystery lovers...
