Product Description:
In this outstanding very first novel, Craig Johnson draws on his background in law enforcement and his deep attachment to the American West to produce a literary mystery of stunning authenticity, and full of memorable characters. Walt Longmire, sheriff of Wyoming’s Absaroka County, knows he’s got trouble when Cody Pritchard is found dead. Two years earlier, Cody and three accomplices had been given suspended sentences for raping a Northern Cheyenne girl. Is someone seeking vengeance? Longmire faces the most volatile and challenging case in his twenty-four years as sheriff and means to see that revenge, a dish that is best served cold, is never served at all.
“We in the West have a major new talent on our hands.”
—The Denver Post
“A winning piece of work, and a convincing feel to the whole package.”
—The Washington Post
“Craig Johnson does it right, with style, grace, wildfire pace, and a sense of humor.”
—Bob Shacochis

I must agree with the reviewer stating "I had trouble following who was saying what. I had to go back and readdress the paragraph heading to see who was speaking".
while I enjoyed the book immensely, this aspect was very annoying. The author needs to pay attention and clarify who is making the statements, etc. Wonderful book, cannot wait to get his other books. The Indian 'spirits' occuring in the snowy woods was a little bit much, but perhaps easily overlooked. All in all, a great read!

The tale is well written the descriptions of the scenes make it perfectly clear the view site inside my imagination!
I only say that the motive of the crime and sex of the perpetrator is known after the page 200 or so, then the suspect list drops a lot, It trys later to mix the mind but there is no way. the real killer is only known at the lasts 30 pages.
Excelent reading!!

The Wyoming sheriff narrates a flowing story that includes: local streets, paths, roads and landmarks; Indian lore and culture; historical events. In short, the author mixes the real world with fiction so the story seems real.

I had read about this author from another source, and curiosity led me to buy this book. What a wonderful surprise! It's a comfy, down-home type - sheriff doesn't want to be the bad guy and have to kill some one, but that doesn't mean that he won't if he has to. This book led me on to buy the subsequent in the series. Unless you're looking for a book that is heavily laden with bordello scenes, you'll enjoy this. Am looking forward for my subsequent book (I should say, books as I ordered the subsequent 2).

First I would like to say, though I read continuously and voraciously, this is the only time I have bothered to write a review, I enjoyed this book that much. If you like Hillerman, Box, Harstad or mysteries in general, you have to read this book. I am having an exceptionally hard time deciding what it is about this book that has me smitten. First it has to be the characters, the banter and humour were irresistible, but the location, and the story also were captivating. I do know the only thing that I can complain about was the empty feeling I had when the book was finished, I missed the characters! I sincerely wished I could hop in the car and drive to Absaroka County Wyoming to hang out with just about every one mentioned in the book.
