Editor's Notes and Comments:

Product Description:
This is the long awaited fourth installment of George R R Martin's classic 'A Song of Ice and Fire', continuing the most ambitious and imaginative epic fantasy since 'The Lord of the Rings'. 'A Feast for Crows' brings to life dark magic, intrigue, and terrible bloodshed as the war-torn landscape of the Seven Kingdoms is threatened by destruction as vast as any in its violent past. The War of the Five Kings has ripped Westeros apart. The bloodthirsty, treacherous and cunning Lannisters occupy the Iron Throne, with allies as ruthless as themselves. Lord Frey was host at the Red Wedding, so called for the massacre of the guests, their screams unheard above the music of the feast. Euron Crow's Eye is as grey a pirate as ever raised a sail, sworn to deliver the whole of Westeros to the ironborn. No less to be feared are their enemies. The Starks of Winterfell and the Martells of Dorne seek vengeance for their dead. And the last of the Targaryens, Daenerys Stormborn, will bring fire and blood to King's Landing when her young dragons reach their terrifying maturity. The last war fought with dragons was a cataclysm powerful enough to shatter the Valyrian peninsula, now a smoking, demon-haunted ruin half drowned by the sea. Against a backdrop of alchemy and murder, victory may go to the men and women possessed of the coldest steel! and the coldest hearts.

Rated by buyers 4 out of 5 stars - Too short
Need more. follow-on was due less than a year after this was released. It did not come. Thus, four stars to express my disappointment, though of course I am still waiting... and will buy the subsequent when it appears. What gives, GRRM?

Rated by buyers 5 out of 5 stars - Different, but still enjoyed it.
After coming to the end of the book, the author states that he originally planned for this and the forthcoming "A Dance with Dragons" to be in the same book, but due to the size of it, he was forced to split the books into two. "A Feast for Crows" veers from the path beaten by the previous three books in the series, as not all the characters we have come to know and love (or hate) have points of view. We are not privy to exactly what is happening at and beyond the Wall or in the fart east. Some events in these places are hinted at in conversations between characters, though the full story is never truly heard, just bits and pieces. New territories are explored and new characters introduced, which serves its purpose, but also is cause for some of the backlash towards this book. Some old favorites are still there and their stories are captivating as always.

Personally, I thoroughly enjoyed this book as it gave a different point of view of the kingdom, progressed the story along, and laid the foundation for bigger and better things yet to come. I would not look at this book as a sequel to "A Storm of Swords", and those expecting the same level of suspense, scheming, and twists might be a little let down. This book seems to be akin to taking a deep breath after the all out assault that was the third book. That is not to say that this book does not have its moments though. I hope that all readers of the series will overlook the negative things they have heard about "A Feast for Crows" and read it for yourself. This was not my favorite book of the series, but it is still A Song of Ice and Fire, which at least for me, is a good thing. In my opinion, regardless of the overall feeling towards the book, it is a must read for any fan of the series, though I can understand wanting to wait until "A Dance with Dragons" is closer to being finished before diving in!

Rated by buyers 5 out of 5 stars - A SCHIZOID REVIEW: I'M GRIEVING AND SPLIT. STILL GIVE HIM 5 STARS
Numenon (Bloodsong) (Bloodsong)I finished this book last night and am in severe withdrawal. I downloaded and read the chapter of the subsequent book that's posted on Martin's website. Read it. I'm still grieving. I want to know how all those stories end. Martin creates characters which are utterly compelling. Some of them anyway. Others I have to force myself to go back to after skipping ahead to the stories I like.

The stories move forward inexorably, like history.

This is a flawed series: The books are too long and too complex. I was going to title my review: CRUEL TO READERS, because of the length and density of the books and because they're so addictive. To get so hooked on a series and then not have the subsequent in line is painful.

After howling about book number 3 in this series, which was 1200+ pages,I shouldn't complain about this one. It weighs out at a tidy 6 or 700 pages. It is dense reading. Lush. Complex. Martin presents a feast for all the senses in his descriptions.

Still, it takes a dedicated reader to get through. I got hooked and read as much as I could get. My husband wouldn't make it through the very first volume; he doesn't have the patience.

As an author who has had plenty of time working with editors and writing groups, the literary part of me was appalled by the number of story lines, the book's length, and that editors of major publishers would let him get away with this. New writers would be trimmed severely.

On the other hand, the writing is so good that if you get hooked, everything we writers are taught in school is thrown away. I want more. I also read Mr. Martin's note on his web site and understand: Growing a saga such as he has as created can only be done word by word, line by line. It takes time.

So take all the time you need and count me in for the subsequent one, George!

Rated by buyers 3 out of 5 stars - A Review for the Audiobook
I really enjoy the series George R.R. Martin creates a twisting tale of deception, that keeps you reading, or in this case listening. The previous three books had Roy Dotrice as the Narrator, and he did an extremely good job, with different voices for each character. For some reason however, Martin used a new Narrator for this book, John Lee. The pronunciation of words sometimes is a bit overdone, and almost all of the characters are indistinguishable from each other.
Why fix something that is not broken Mr. Martin?

Rated by buyers 5 out of 5 stars - One of the greatest Epic stories ever written.
Maybe the best story I've ever read. Epic in span. The books look intimidating in size, but they read fast. There are no good guys and bad guys, just characters with their own motivations. At the end of the very first book, I had my favorite character and my most hated characters(two brothers); at the end of the third book the brothers were my favorite characters. The character development in this story is second to none. This series of books would appeal to non science-fiction fans. I can't recommend it enough. The only thing that scares me is that there are at least 2, probably 3, more books to come, and the author is gray-haired and over weight. I pray this series is completed.
