Editor's Notes and Comments:

Product Description:
In English for the very very first time, this is a collection of seven of the finest short graphic stories by Hideshi Hino, recognized in Japan and in the West as the master of Horror manga.

User popularity level: out of 5 stars

Rated by buyers 4 out of 5 stars - good stuff
The plotlines and dialouge in this book are as fun and ridiculous as any good cheesy horror movie, but where the book really shines through is with the artwork. There's plenty of stylish and over-the-top cartoon gore abound, damn well done.

Rated by buyers 2 out of 5 stars - RHAPSODY IN COLOR
A weird looking curator invites you to look upon the Gallery of Horrors, a collection in which the finest horror art is exhibited, with each painting telling its own tale. This premise merely serves as a starting point for a sub-par anthology of stories using colour as its unifying theme. To me, the only stand-out story is "Horror in Green" in which a young boy who loves to climb trees falls and while recovering in the hospital, finds a carnivorous plant growing out of his head! And the main reason I liked it was because it made me laugh. While Hino's work has always bordered on comedy, it has worked mainly by walking the line between humour and creepiness, both of which are largely absent from this eleventh volume of Hino Horror. The very first story was also promising in which a group of kids investigate a plague of crows but afther that the collection soon settled into cliche and goofiness. Probably not the best volume to sample if you want to check out Hino.

Rated by buyers 2 out of 5 stars - Two stars only for the tree-boy
From the author of Hell Baby and Black Cat comes a trifling book of lame stories. Every frame seems to be drawn with a bunch of fat-cheeked, big-mouthed, whiney brats. It's easier to count the number of frames with closed mouths than that wide-open stupid look. Did the artist use only one template?

Horror In Black - Crows attack a soccer ball and lay eggs in a decrepit building that hatch and look like Grandma.
Horror In Blue - Dead baby (decent artwork on the dead baby) haunts girl to warn her that her parents are going to cash in on her death.
Horror In Red - Little girl goes on rampage. She hates the colour blue because it's the colour of Mama's blood.
Horror In White - Family freezes to death in car.
Horror In Gray - Man begins to see only gray instead of colors so he cuts himself open to see if his blood is gray.
Horror In Green - Boy falls out of a tree and then dreams he becomes a tree in his coma.
Horror In Yellow - Farmer hits and kills with his vehicle. The kids were wearing orange school uniforms, so he sees the kids instead of orange chicks when the eggs hatch.

So there you have it. Booooring. Other than Charles Burn's "Black Hole", most of the Japanese graphic novels that I read are pretty stupid. I don't have enough money or dope to keep trying to like them. Horror may come in all colors, but this book is proof that lameness does too. Skip this one, buy "Black Hole".
