Editor's Notes and Comments:

Product Description:
Philip Perkis is one of the most widely respected American photographers, yet his work is little known outside of professional circles. In this fifty-year retrospective, and very first published collection, his inimitable vision is brought to the public. With a gift for capturing moments of heartbreaking honesty and unparalleled beauty, he presents a world on the brink of transcendence. Taken in the most humble circumstances—snapped from the driver's seat or taken at home—these images are so much more than the sum of their parts. The electric fury of barking dogs in the streets of Mexico, the white stillness of Israel, and the silence of a sleeping mother, carry within them complexities of gray, of raw emotion and metaphor. These images are the gift of a master observer with an eye tuned to the almost imperceptible miracles of everyday life. They are not one-line gags or jaded images of the poor or suffering, rather they are evocative explorations of the lovely sadness of life and the wild, sweet rhythms of the world. 125 duotone photographs.

Rated by buyers 5 out of 5 stars - 'I see sadness as a possibility of transcendence.'
The name Philip Perkis may not be immediately recognizable as an artist of renown, but slowly leafing through this exquisite collection of photographs from this sensitive humanist and photographer will set his name indelibly in the minds of the viewer. This is one of the most quiet and yet radiant collections of images of the simplest aspects of our world and our lives, and in Philip Perkis' hands these become at once honest and at the same time almost otherworldly.

Traveling around the world Perkis snaps his suddenly observed phenomena from a passing car window or from his stance as a walker to places rarely viewed by others. The results are on hundred twenty-five duotones that jolt the viewers attention to perceive the essence of the photographer's message. From throughout the United States, Mexico, Canada, and Turkey, Israel, Lebanon and other countries Perkis pauses to capture the magic of light on landscapes and water and rocks and fields, explores people and animals at rest and at play, and bizarre realities such as a shop ceiling in Guadalajara, Mexico with transparent packages of cherubs and saints hanging above countless religious images that happen to be for sale, states of Halloween celebrations in New York City, mirror collections in Istanbul, camel markets in Cairo, all intermixed with quite images of deserted roads or feathers floating or a swan - dead but appearing to be sleeping.

Perkis, in a fine interview with John Braverman Levin at book's end addresses the title of this collection: 'I make a distinction between the word "sadness" and the word "depression". They're not at all interchangeable in my mind. I think depression is negative. I see sadness as a positive emotion. I see sadness as beautiful. I see sadness as a possibility of transcendence. Sadness and happiness are two sides of the same coin, as far as I'm concerned'. This gentle statement is reflected on every page of this magnificent collection of photographs. It is a richly rewarding experience to share. Highly recommended. Grady Harp, November 08

Rated by buyers 5 out of 5 stars - Philip Perkis - True Artist, True Teacher
Philip Perkis is a true artist. Everytime I look at this book, I become to ask myself, what a person lives for?, what is the point of life? It is so amazing to see how all spirituality transpired into photography. I see the mystery of our existence in this book and I sense of hope and faith through sadness of men. This "sadness of men" purifies me.

Philip Perkis is the best teacher in my life. He never tried to force his opinion upon us. He had great eye to see the ability of his students and to develop them further. He respected personality the most, the feeling of one's own dignity, that not everyone is alike. Thanks to him, I have this life with faith on myself. He liberates me.

Rated by buyers 5 out of 5 stars - Amazingly thoughtful images
Philip Perkis' "The Sadness of Men" exceeded my expectations. The images are of a wide variety of places and people, but Perkis' vision brings together a thoughtful reflection on place and experience. I highly recommend anyone interested in photography and good images to consider this book. I may even purchase it for a friend or, two.

Rated by buyers 5 out of 5 stars - Joyous Sadness
Fifty years of Philip Perkis' sublime photographs are beautifully reproduced in this wonderful book. Having been an admirer of this great artist for some years, I am delighted to have acess to so many of his images. Perkis' craft is unsurpassed in the world of photography and his vision is profoundly moving, illuminating, and sometimes quite funny. Contemplating the beautiful work in THE SADNESS OF MEN has not only touched a sense of existential sadness in me but has also awakened deep sources of joy. A genuine masterpiece.

Rated by buyers 5 out of 5 stars - An impressive body of work and especially recommended to students of photography
Featuring an informative introduction by art critic Max Kozloff, "The Sadness Of Men" is a 280-page compendium showcasing a fifty-year retrospective of the black-and-white photography Philip Perkins -- a gifted photographer whose work is little known outside professional circles within which he is greatly respected for his ability to capture memorable images through a camera's lens with his artist's eye. The images are 125 duotone photographs taken primarily throughout Mexico, New York, Turkey, and Israel, and range from an image of a solitary figure suspended from a crane above Coney Island, to a grey road in a stark white landscape, to dogs barking in the streets of Las Juntas. An impressive body of work and especially recommended to students of photography and aspiring visual artists, "The Sadness Of Men" will aptly serve to bring a talented and heretofore obscure world-class photographer to the attention of a whole new generation of appreciative viewers.
