Editor's Notes and Comments:

Product Description:
A young woman vanishes from a celebrity-studded party on South Beach. The media descend, and the spotlight threatens to reveal the secret past of a high-profile criminal defense attorney.

C.J. Dunn is an expert at spinning her clients' image in the media. She's the perfect lawyer to deflect police interest in Rick Slater, head of security for Bob Shelby, a U.S. Congress man from Miami. Slater was seen at a South Beach party with the recently vanished Alana Martin, but in election season, any hint of scandal could doom the Congressman's chances. C.J. has reasons not to like Slater's boss, but, if she succeeds, friends of the Congressman have assured her they can arrange a spot for her as a legal commentator on a national media outlet. For a woman living alone, with few close friends, a celebrity life has its appeal.

But as the media close in, hounding everyone connected to the case, C.J. finds connections she had never anticipated. When Alana Martin is found dead and C.J.'s investigator implicates Rick Slater, C.J. is slammed between the media and the need to defend a client she no longer trusts. Then he delivers a bombshell: C.J.'s daughter, Traci Willis, the child she gave up for adoption seventeen years ago, was a friend of Alana Martin's. Traci has information that could save Rick Slater, but at the same time reveal a devastating secret that would put C.J.'s career, and even her life, on the line.

Rated by buyers 3 out of 5 stars - Not her best
I just recently finished Barbara's Parker new book "The Dark of Day".
It is not part of her on-going series featuring Gail Connor, a Miami attorney. I knew that when I purchased this book but believed that I would love anything she wrote.

Well, this book just did not thrill me like her other books have. The main character is another Miami lawyer, but does not have the depth of her previous efforts. The characters were a bit one dimensional and predictable. I was saying to myself "oh, please!"..when reading some of the dialogue. I did not feel a bond to anyone except perhaps the male criminal suspect and the lawyer's ex father in law.

I was able to put this book down over a period of days, when I usually have read her previous books in one sitting.

The book had a lot of potential, but it just fell short of the mark for me. I would give it a 3-1/2 stars instead of 3, but it was not possible with this rating feature.

Would I have bought this book if I had known this? Probably...I like to judge things for myself! But...I would have waited and bought it used when the prices came down a bit.

Rated by buyers 4 out of 5 stars - joyful
The author caputered the South Beach lifestyle quite accurately. It was an interesting suspense novel but it dragged on and on and on. Could say more with less words. Even though it was a good story, I'd be reluctant to read more of her work.

Rated by buyers 3 out of 5 stars - Disappointing new series
I always look forward to Barbara Parker's books. Couldn't wait to read the latest. Found the new characters interesting to a point but I kept waiting for more. Thought it was a good story line but I wanted more from the main characters. I did like the detective and the uncle who lives behind C.J.'s house. I wanted more interaction between C.J. and Kylie. I felt that the chauffer - Rick Slater needed to interact more with C.J. Didn't like Billy Medina, couldn't see why C.J. bothered with him. Not looking forward to this new character (C.J.) in coming books.

Rated by buyers 5 out of 5 stars - Hard to Put Down Thriller
I am a real Barbara Parker fan. Her newest book is not a disappointment. The story line is exciting and as intriguing as all of the "Suspicion of" novels. The twists and turns as well as exciting characters makes one call for more even when this particular story is through.

Rated by buyers 5 out of 5 stars - Great Legal Thriller
Anyone who likes intriguing characters, a plot full of twists and turns, and a tropical Miami setting should read Barbara Parker! Parker is a former Florida prosecutor; her protagonist in this novel is high power defense attorney C.J. Dunn, whose clients are not the only ones with skeletons in their closets. I enjoyed Parker's "Suspicion" series as well, and hope that she will write more books about C.J. Dunn. If you have enjoyed other legal thrillers, try reading The Dark of Day--it won't disappoint you.
