I had never read J.A. Jance before, and started this book on a rainy afternoon with minimal expectations. While the writing style is quite basic (I suspect you cannot write as many novels as Jance does and agonize over prose), I must say the plot line was a lot of fun! Many twists and turns and interesting characters. Geek investigators, tough gay butlers, overbearing moms, a techno-serial killer.... there is something here for everyone. Overall a really fun read!

As another reviewer put it, this novel would be leaps and bounds better if it was suspenseful, but instead, you are given all the details within the very first five pages of the murder that would be discussed over the course of the entire book. The characters are developed well though, and the intermixing between plots leads to a rather solid literary result as a whole, and a story that you are interested in seeing resolved.

Cruel Intent is the very first J A Jance novel I have read. This is the fourth in the Ali Reynolds series. A former TV journalist the character of Reynolds is well written. It presents multiple layers and keeps the reader interested.
In Cruel Intent Ali must prove a hapless husband innocent of his wife's murder. She seems to be the only person in town that believes him. Of course if he is quilty Ali might never finish her home construction project.
I gave this book four stars only because I prefer a mystery, a good puzzle. While this story is chilling and filled with suspence it never held my curiousity. The author presents us with the murderer, his methods and motives on the very first two pages.
