Editor's Notes and Comments:

Product Description:
Two-time Anthony Award-winning author William Kent Krueger has 'moved to the head of the crime fiction class' (Chicago Sun-Times) with his gripping series featuring Sheriff Cork O'Connor. In Copper River, Cork is running for his life -- and straight into a murderous conspiracy involving teenage runaways.

Desperately avoiding the clutches of professional hit men who have already put a bullet in his leg, Cork finds sanctuary outside the small Michigan town of Bodine. But while he's hiding out in an old resort owned by his cousin Jewell DuBois, a bitter widow with a fourteen-year-old son named Ren, the body of a young girl surfaces along the banks of the Copper River -- and then another teenager vanishes. Instead of thwarting his assassins, Cork focuses on tracking a ring of killers who prey on innocent children -- before anyone else falls victim. But as his deadly followers close in, Cork realizes he's made an error any good man might make -- and it may be his last.

Rated by buyers 4 out of 5 stars - Compelling, Small Town Suspense
Recovering from a gunshot wound to his thigh and hiding from a contract killer, Sheriff Cork O'Connor feels pretty useless these days. He can barely walk out of his cousin Jewell's cabin without collapsing. Not a good situation when cougar tracks are found among the cabins and local teens are either missing, critically injured, or dead over a one-week span in this small town. Cork's worries turn to fear when Jewell's son, Ren, and his friend, Charlie (short for Charlene), see a body in the river and soon realize someone's after them. Trouble mounts as the town's local reporter learns Cork's identity and the reason he's come to Bodine.

William Kent Krueger's COPPER RIVER is a suspenseful, elegantly written story about family and loss and one man's endeavor to do the right thing. The right thing, however, might be the wrong thing and this is partly why the novel is so suspenseful. Another reason is that the reader knows something the main characters don't, a strategy that works well in a book that has few chase scenes or shoot-em-up action to ramp up the excitement. In fact, Bodine's slow pace adds another layer of tension as the adults try to figure out what's really going on before another teen is killed.

The author's vivid narrative descriptions, great dialogue, and strong portrayal of psychological turmoil make this a truly compelling story. My only quibble is the predictable timing of the cougar's appearance. Still, Copper River is a terrific read.

Rated by buyers 2 out of 5 stars - Disappointing
I have read all of Mr. Kruegers, Cork O'Connor books and have been really happy and impressed with the writing. But this one made me angry because it was NOT about Cork. It was about teenagers. The writing was not up to Mr. Kruegers usual standards. This book should be taken out of circulation, it is not worthy of Mr. Krueger.

Rated by buyers 3 out of 5 stars - The Hardy Boys on Steroids
If it weren't for the swear words and some gore, I'd think this book was written for teenagers. This is one of those thrillers where hardened cops let kids and housewives join in the manhunt for dangerous killers. Ridiculous. And a lot of the dialog is teen talk. And a lot of things just happen coincidentally -- you know, everything's so well-planned that the author can just wrap the book up in a nice little -- albeit unbelieveable -- package. On the other hand, it was fast and light reading, although the ending is simply ridiculous. I think the book deserves only two stars but I'll give it three because I've liked Krueger's other books and it did keep me amused for the time I read it. But it could have been better.

Rated by buyers 5 out of 5 stars - Excellent book
William Kent Krueger is one of my favorite authors and I was not disapointed in this book. It is however, a sequel to Mercy Falls (his previous) so I would recommend you read it very first so you are aware of the history. They are both stand alone books though so it is an enjoyable read none the less. Good suspense with a double twist at the end.

Rated by buyers 4 out of 5 stars - Good read, but
I am a fan of the series, and this was a good book, but for me it lacked the interaction with Cork's family and the interplay with the local tribe. The interaction with wife, children, and local characters is one of the reasons I like this series, and they were sadly missing from this book. One hopes that future books will go back to the formula of previous offerings by Mr Box.
