Editor's Notes and Comments:

Product Description:
The sheriff of Justice, Illinois, is hunting a killer. Women visiting town are being murdered, tourists in nice hotels, money still in their billfolds, jewelry still on the dresser. Quiet kills--they go to sleep and never awaken. The sheriff is not pleased to find the new detective in town, Rae Gabriella, working the case on behalf of one of the families. She's staying in the same hotel as one of the victims--and her looks suggest she could be the subsequent victim.

Rated by buyers 3 out of 5 stars - The nicest love triangle you'll ever read
This is my second foray into Christian (or "inspirational") fiction in the last couple of months, which is unusual for me. In this case, I liked the story, a lot. There's some lack of resolution at the end, so I expect this will turn into a series. I liked all three main characters, and I thought the mystery was interesting and complex enough to keep you guessing. But, I found the preaching to be a little heavy in this. It's certainly not offensive to me, but I found myself tuning out during a few protracted conversations about God and religion. And after I while I missed the character conflict that usually comes along with a suspense story... Everyone was just so nice to each other. So, while I liked the story, I think I'll be steering clear of this genre for a while.

Rated by buyers 3 out of 5 stars - Good but not Great
The trouble with being a good author is that everyone expect everything to keep getting better than the last one. Given Henderson's early works, that's a tough resume to beat. All in all, Before I Wake was downright boring if compared to her other works. That if is important, but it was a decent read. The dialogue seemed a touch wooden, but it was still believable.

Characters didn't really develop, but that was balanced by the intricacy of the plot. The ending came far too abruptly. I flipped the page back and forth like 3 times to see if I'd missed something. The book to that point is thick though, so it's like the author had a 600 pg novel and knew it was too long so took an axe and chopped the thing in half.

Will I buy the subsequent one: no.

Will I read the subsequent one: probably.

Do I recommend you read this book and the subsequent one: yes, Dee Henderson is a worthy author to read. Go for it.

Rated by buyers 4 out of 5 stars - Great suspense, but leaves you dangling
This book was absolutely great! I thoroughly enjoyed the action, the glimpse into the drug designing business was interesting, and the account of the factory strike and how it affected the whole town was well done. The suspense was just terrific, with the mysterious deaths and lack of evidence.

Drawbacks? One minor point was that it had quite a few grammatical goofs, which I find distracting. Also, there wasn't really any romance, even though it kept hinting at it, so that left you feeling a little confused.

But the worst part is that it simply left you hanging. Completely! Yes, a few things did get settled, but all the way through the book I kept changing my mind about whodunit, and oh, grrrr! I didn't find out nearly enough to satisfy me. I hope other reviewers are right, and she will do a sequel!

Rated by buyers 5 out of 5 stars - Food for Thought
I liked the way you were drawn in as the various people in the story like Rae Gabriella who is a P.I. and Sheriff Nathan Justice initially knock heads but eventually team up to solve the case. Like other books by Dee Henderson, you are affected by the interpersonal relationships going on as well. Always a good read.

Rated by buyers 3 out of 5 stars - Okay, but not this author's best
My very first clue that this book wasn't as good as some other Henderson books was that I could put it down and not pick it up for a while whereas I had to keep reading the other books. It did get more interesting by the end and I will definitely read the subsequent in the series to find out what happens. It is still a good book, but just not what I have come to expect from Dee Henderson.
