Editor's Notes and Comments:

Product Description:
Joe Kieran has found that unearthing the truth for a newspaper can be painful, and telling it, heartbreaking. Hiding from his past big city exposés in the quiet coastal town of Terrel, he stumbles upon a web of mysterious teen suicides that somehow connect a ring of five women. Is there really a malevolent presence inside Terrel Cliff that holds all of the town in thrall as Angelica, a fortune teller, suggests? Or is there a murderous covenant between five women to sacrifice their first-born? When Angelica is kidnapped right under his nose, Joe suspects that there is more at work in Terrel than a dark, tragic streak.

Deep beneath the remains of a long-demolished lighthouse on its tragic cliff, Joe discovers Terrel's secret history and salvation. And in his desperate bid to save two women, he forges a new covenant, one that puts his own soul in deadly danger.

Rated by buyers 5 out of 5 stars - The latest and greatest in erotic horror!!!
Horror... sex... suicides... sex... action (yeah, in the form of sex as well as other)... well... you get the idea!!! I'm an avid reader of both horror and erotica and when they are mixed together as well as John Everson has done with Covenant, well... that just puts a fan like me in "book heaven". Everson grabbed my attention immediately when I started this book and I had a hard time forcing myself to put it down in order to go to sleep at night or to go back into work after my lunch break each day. The scenes are compiled with such vivid details that I could truly visualize what all was going on. Of course, in some instances this might not have been the best of things. (John... if you're reading this I'm sure you'll know what I'm referring to!) I found this to be a great "starter" book for me into the works of Everson and am greatly looking forward to reading more works by him. (Especially the sequel to COVENANT... SACRIFICE... but do I REALLY have to wait until June of 2009?!?!?!?!?) I definitely recommend this to all fans of horror that don't mind a bit of sex put into the mix. Everson has quickly reached my top fave horror authors list, not only for his writing style, but also due to the fact that he is such an all-around great guy. I've conversed with him via email off and on for a while now and last weekend had the opportunity to meet him in person and get my copy of COVENANT signed. I like when authors take the time out to get to know their fans as I know at least one author that would probably be my fave author of all time if they were to do the same, but due to the lack of that I can't put them up at the top of the list. Sorry... I've gotten off on a tangent, but in conclusion... READ COVENANT BY JOHN EVERSON!!!!!!!!!!

Rated by buyers 4 out of 5 stars - Impressive Debut By A Talented New Writer
I can see why COVENANT won the Stoker Award for best very first novel. It's an ambitious story on many levels, and for the most part, Everson pulls it off. A wonderfully creepy very first third slides into some predictable patterns, but Everson throws so much danger, sex, and mythology at the reader, you're bound to enjoy yourself. I think he maybe gave too much information away in chapter three, because I would have liked to piece the story together myself as our main character begins his investigation, rather than have the secret given away so soon. I was also confused at some of the decisions some of the characters made... like witnessing an abduction and not calling the police when there was no reason not to, etc.

The author does a nice job keeping the fantastic material grounded in a reality that is believable and sympathetic. Everson's skill as a technical writer is just as strong as his storytelling ability and that is something I don't see very often. Usually someone is much stronger in one area. John Everson seems to have the entire package as a writer and his love for hardcore horror is readily apparent, and one I very much welcome. The pros heavily outweigh the cons in this story and I'm definitely looking forward to reading his new book, SACRIFICE, the sequel to COVENANT.

Rated by buyers 3 out of 5 stars - Over the Top
When I started this book, I was interested in where it was going, I liked the main character, I enjoyed meeting the secondary characters and their stories. I was entertained by the experiences and the attitude with which the book was written and some scenes while a bit 'over the top' fit in well with the book. Then the 'demon' spoke and I was done. If the author hadn't made 'the voice' so obnoxious I would have hung around but at that point, I no longer cared where the book was going or how the 'demon' would be conquered or even how the book ended. The reason I gave this book the third star, is because some readers might actually enjoy this book despite the reason I didn't. It was well written, the story had depth, the scenes were easy to visualize and it contained several suspenseful moments.

Rated by buyers 5 out of 5 stars - A Classic
I don't know what to add to what has already been said about this Novel. It is a gripping, fast-paced work that doesn't allow itself to be put down. The reader needs to know 'what will happen next'. The descriptions of everything from local scenery to blood and gore are perfect. You are there on the peak and in the caves. I am impatiently waitin for the sequel.

Rated by buyers 4 out of 5 stars - A cliff-hanger?
Titles can't be copyrighted. Thus, a couple years ago, two horror movies came out called The Covenant. Neither was any good. Now, John Everson has come out with a book called Covenant. Maybe it's because the word "The" is missing, but it is light years better than either movie. (As a side note, James Michener also wrote a good book called The Covenant.)

Everson's book takes place in one of those small towns that are the prime setting for horror. In this story, what's haunted is not a house or a building, but a cliff near the town of Terrel: one inhabited by a demonic presence that demands that people die by diving off the precipice. Reporter Joe Kieran - a man with a semi-dark secret in his past that forced him to move to Terrel - has noticed a trend that dates back decades, in which residents occasionally commit suicide on May 22 and outsiders kill themselves on Halloween.

It's a secret that few want to discuss. For the residents, they fear that if the cliff doesn't get its sacrifices, something far worse will happen. For a particular group of women - most of whom have lost children to the cliff - the truth is known, and it's tied to a covenant that they have formed with the cliff demon. It's a vicious creature that can possess and feeds not only on death but degradation as well.

For horror fans, Covenant is a relatively routine horror novel, but it is nonetheless well-written and Everson keeps interest going throughout. Covenant is a pleasant enough diversion and should be enjoyed by fans of the genre.
