Product Description:
In the woods are six dead trees. The killing trees. That's where they take them. People like Neala and her friend Sherri, and the Dills family. Innocent travellers on vacation, seized and bound, stripped of their valuables and shackled to the trees to wait. In the woods. In the dark.

Rated by buyers 4 out of 5 stars - From J. Kaye's Book Blog
When two parties, Neala and Sherri, The Dill family and Cordelia's boyfriend, get caught, they are chained up to six dead trees. But one of the capturers, Johnny Robins, comes back to save them. As soon as he finishes releasing them, the Krulls start attacking. They start getting separated. One of them, Ruth Dills, gets caught and here husband Lander Dills, goes back to save her. Meanwhile Cordelia Dills and her boyfriend Ben wait for there parents to catch up. Johnny, Neala, and Sherri go on ahead. But while separated people get killed and one gets captures. And more on the history and life of the Krulls is revealed.

What I liked best was the jam-packed suspense scenes. My favorite character was Lander Dill. He is funny, poetic, and is pretty good at killing Krulls.

Rated by buyers 4 out of 5 stars - Great 1st read
This is my very first Laymon novel. I really enjoyed all of it and am looking forward to reading more of his novels. I just happened to pick this up in the book store and read the very first chapter about how this was pieced back together. I would rather read more of his other novels than try and find the other version. I would highly recommend this book if you love horror, sex, and grusome details. They would NEVER be able to make this into a movie!!

Rated by buyers 2 out of 5 stars - Border-line pulp...
Not sure how much I like Laymon. I've been told by several people that this is his best. But I sure didn't enjoy it.

I like how it started off. And I liked the premise in general, But after awhile, it got a bit silly. It was gorey, violent, and while that normally doesn't bother me, it did here. It was just TOO gorey, and TOO violent. It wasn't scary in the least, either. It just left me with a bad taste in my mouth.

The characters weren't convincing, either. Out the door with personality, and what we're left with are pieces of cardboard that are there for sole purpose of getting eaten or being dismembered.

If intense, pointless sequences of gore, rape, and violence are your kind of thing, I'm sure you'd love this. I'm a fan of horror fiction, don't get me wrong, but this really didn't do it for me.

Rated by buyers 1 out of 5 stars - Wow...major disappointment.
I picked this one up after reading the blurbs on the back and thought, "Well, this sounds like it should be good." Then I actually sat down and read it--and was sorely disappointed.

The plot is interesting enough, borrowing on the "people who travel and go missing" type of theme, but it's the characters where the book really fails--they're empty, one-dimensional and wholly uninteresting. You don't get any "feel" for them before, during or even after the events begin to unfold; at times you can't remember who is who, they all seem so alike. There's no real emotion (even the fear seems off-kilter) to any of them, a fact that was really driven home when the Krull character of Lily is introduced--somehow this apparent runaway seems to think it's "cool" to be a cannibal yet acts as if she just came from a trip to the mall--difficult to believe at best. And, like pretty much every female character with a name (and many without), she's practically a sex addict. Good grief, I felt like I was reading an erotic novel rather than a horror novel, there's so much sex talk (up to and including rape) throughout.

The events themselves also kind of unfolded in a disjointed fashion; the run through the woods seemed piecemeal, with little tension or continuity. At no point did I find myself really caring who died or how, as the characters themselves largely didn't seem to care!

Sorry, but after reading this I've crossed any further Richard Laymon novels off my list--if I want to read a porn story, there's an Internet just chock full of free ones.

Rated by buyers 5 out of 5 stars - Compact but packs one heck of a punch
I never read the eunuch version of this novel, so I can't make any comparisons in that respect. I can, however, state that this is one sick and disturbing book and I mean in that the most positive sense. In a brief 215 pages, we are introduced to some real blood curdling characters that makes the reader ponder over the true and innate nature of man. If put in similar predicament how would the average law abiding and conscientious person respond? Do we consider ourselves incapable of savagery and pack mentality or if pushed with little other recourse, do we cannibalize one another in order to not only survive but thrive in an unfamiliar and brutal environment? In short, it asks just how deep in our conscience does the hunter lurk? This, of course, is hardly a new hypothetical question, as it's been explored more profoundly in such literary masterpieces as The Heart of Darkness and Lord of the Flies, but it does present it an unflinching and utterly violent way, making it all the more terrifying. I must say, I loved the characters and how they struggled with both their plight and animalistic urges. This is not for those that are easily disturbed because it can be a somewhat revolting experience, but if you love very first rate horror, you will enjoy every blood soaked and deranged page. One of Laymon's best, if not his best. Awesome!
