Rated by buyers 4 out of 5 stars - A Laymon Classic
The Cellar is Laymon's most notorious book, because it's got so much sex and violence. There's a house, known as Beast House, full of some creatures that start killing people. Some people form a plot to go kill what lives in the house, but it's not as easy as they think. Meanwhile, some child rapist is kidnapping a little girl and bringing her to the house.(note: there's some explicit scenes in this book that will shock a lot of people). All I can say is that the end of the book will totally disturb you.

Rated by buyers 5 out of 5 stars - A Suspenseful Creepfest
Richard Laymon is an author who holds nothing back in his horror stories, and this book is a prime example. We are introduced to Donna, a single mom and her daughter Sandy. Donna gets a phone call one day that her ex just got out of prison. She grabs her young daughter and together they immediately vacate their home. You see, Roy- the scumbag exhusband - did a very bad thing to Sandy when she was younger ( as well as abused Donna )and Donna wants to protect her beloved daughter and herself from Roy, because she knows that he will try and get his revenge on them for putting him in jail.

After hours of driving they hit a bad patch of fog, and their car has a bit of an accident. A strange man comes along and eventually they hitch a ride with him into Malcasa Point, which is a small town but one that has a big tourist attraction...."The Beast House". There's a dangerous, bloody and fatal history to the Beast House, and the current owner offers grisly tours daily.

Donna and Sandy, take the tour and meet a couple of gentlemen also touring the place. One is named Judgment and the other, named Larry, has a long history with the Beast House. The displays at the house are very life-like and gruesome and the story the owner tells is beyond believable...or is it?

Meanwhile Roy is going through innocent people like a hot knife through butter and kidnaps a young girl, doing unspeakable things to the poor child. He eventually finds out where is ex and daughter are and follows them, excited at the thought of taking his revenge.

Reading how all the characters and their stories work together is like unwrapping a piece of chocolate...you can't wait to devour it. As with the other Laymon books I have read, this one doesn't skimp on sex ( human and subhuman )and the body count goes up and up. What happened in the past, as revealed by a long ago writtern diary, and happens now in the Beast House had me hooked, and I couldn't read this book fast enough to see what came next.

Rated by buyers 1 out of 5 stars - Please read something else
I'm sorry I really didn't like the book at all. The plot was weak and child rape was it for me. The plot was too far out there and to sum it up find something else to read.

Rated by buyers 3 out of 5 stars - Not proud that I read every page
This is about a house rumored to contain a blood thirsy beast. It starts out with a triple murder, then more murder, an innocent child is abused & molested in the typical Laymon style. It's hard to stomach the kiddie stuff, it really is, and I don't understand the need to put it in the book (there are other way to elude to it without the graphics).

I did finish this but can't say as I'm proud of the fact. This book was ridiculous. I enjoyed shouting out the ridiculousness of the plot holes to my husband as I found each one which is probably the only reason I managed to finish the book. A little past a third of the way through the book delves into the past of the "beast" and it is so over-the-top nutso it's just hilarious. And the silly ending just topped it all off. I'm doing my best not to spoil things if you are inclined to check out this monstrosity for yourself but it made no sense at all given the fact that the women/child had been abused and there was no reason behind the last chapter besides some sort of weird unearthly attraction Laymons' women have to white hairless, jowled beasts with lots of teeth and huge male parts! Sexy? I think not . . . Gross? You betcha.

Rated by buyers 3 out of 5 stars - Not for everybody...
This is the very first novel I've read by Richard Laymon (based on the recommendation in Horror: Another 100 Best Books). The Cellar is a fast-paced novel. It follows the classic formula: it starts out on a scare and begins the story proper. Donna Hayes gets a terrifying phone call: her ex-husband, Roy, has just been released from jail. Roy is a sociopath who had raped their daughter, Sandy. Donna immediately takes Sandy up the California coast with Roy hot on their heels. Their car breaks down (of course it does) in a small town whose one attraction is "Beast House" - a house "haunted" by an inhuman monster that slaughters anyone who enters after dark. (During the day, there is a guided tour - apparently the "beast" is good about not messing up the furniture.)

There are two horrors in this story - the "beast" and Roy. I found Roy to be more disturbing; so much so that you shouldn't read the book if you are squeamish. Roy is a sadistic rapist and much of his violence is directed at children. At times, I though I might have to skip over passages or stop reading.

The issue of "bad taste" does come up, but it is difficult to discuss bad taste in relation to horror because horror is in some ways all about bad taste. Laymon does not glorify Roy - the opposite, really - but it is just very painful to read what he does. The question of whether or not the scenes in this book belong in an "entertainment" is another, more difficult question.

Then, there is the "beast." Of course, there is more going on there than meets they eye. If you are good you will probably be able to guess where the ending is going before you get there. Depending on your temperament, you will find the resolution disturbing or silly.
