Editor's Notes and Comments:

Product Description:
Davey's on the down and out when he loses his girl, his job and practically his sanity. While some men drown themselves in a forgiving bottle, Davey believes it's much more profitable to sink into Times Square's nightlife and lose himself inside Live Girls. They are the free ravishing pleasures who beckon Davey into a world of irresistible fantasy and ecstasy. One of them propositions him with a kiss, an insatiable kiss that leads him far from the misery he once felt to a demonic place where body and soul are sacrificed for obsessions.

Rated by buyers 5 out of 5 stars - For lovers of vampire novels, a must read!
Swift read that's part vampire tale, part character study and a little bit of erotica for those who enjoy their horror a little on the steamy side. This fast paced novel doesn't release its grip for even one second. Though the story occasionally borrows from existing folklore and myth, it adds just enough original ideas and concepts to fashion a terrific yarn that reads like an action film but never at the expense of the characters and though they are everyday Joes and Janes, they are also sympathetic, if somewhat wounded individuals grappling to survive in a society that seems to reject them at every turn. I don't know the publishing history of the novel, however, I do know that it was written in mid 80's and there a few tell-tale signs that may put off those who like their horror uber current but, ultimately, its worth lies in the content and there's a great deal here to both entice and excite. Marrying the seedy and squalid, pre-gentrification Times Square with the vampire lore was inspired. Within the confines of a tawdry peep show lives an ancient coven of female vampires who use the outcasts of society who frequent such establishment as incubators for their bloodlust. Davey Owens was just such a person. Recently dumped by his self-destructive girlfriend and fired from his dead end job, he wanders into Live Girls one day with little regard for the consequences. He's at the end of his emotional rope and all he wants is a cheap and guaranteed thrill. When the most beautiful woman has ever seen beckons to him, he happily goes and soon, like a moth to a flame, finds himself obsessed with her beauty and impossibly white skin and cool touch. One thing leads to another and those who surround Davey, either directly or indirectly soon find themselves embroiled in his nightmare until, eventually, it becomes their nightmare, too. This is an exciting and, at times, very sexy novel with a satisfying conclusion that doesn't feel either rushed or contrived. . Highly recommended.

Rated by buyers 3 out of 5 stars - B-Movie Fun
LIVE GIRLS is a 1987 novel that many people consider a minor horror masterpiece. I'm not so sure about that, but it's an enjoyable read.

The story takes place in New York City during the mid-1980s, when Times Square was dominated by junkies and the sex industry. LIVE GIRLS begins with the concept that the area serves a breeding ground for vampires, which is an interesting idea. Needless to say, the sex and violence in this book is quite graphic, and squeamish readers should stay away.

I enjoyed this book, which kind of resembles a B-horror movie you might catch on cable at two in the morning. It's good naughty fun, and undeniably exciting in parts. The prose is kind of pedestrian, and many of the characters are almost embarrassingly two-dimensional. But the plot has an undeniable momentum, and I finished LIVE GIRLS in a few sittings. This is a fun read that horror fans should enjoy.

Rated by buyers 4 out of 5 stars - Groundbreaking vampire novel
If there is a lesson to be learned from this story, it is this: if you see your friend slowly becoming a vampire, don't try to help him or her, or you'll end up becoming the subsequent meal. One of author Ray Garton's earliest novels, Live Girls still packs a punch two decades later, and it remains one of his most talked-about works.

In 1987, when Live Girls very first came out, vampire fiction was not as prevalent and oversaturated as it is today, and it was quite a shocker. By giving the subgenre a boldly erotic new twist, Garton instantly made his name with horror fans (including those who were too horrified by its explicit content). The book was even nominated for one of the very first Bram Stoker Awards.

Davey Owen's verbally abusive girlfriend has left him and he feels it's his fault. Looking for solace, he is mysteriously compelled against his better judgment to walk through the curtain of Live Girls, an unassuming gentlemen's club located in Times Square. There he meets Anya, who makes him feel better than he ever has and, unbeknownst to Davey, begins to change his life forever.

Modern readers will likely not be as impressed with the groundbreaking aspects of Live Girls, but this book is still a fine read with a lot of surprising scenes. The plot starts with the very first page and never lets up until the end; Garton's kinetic prose practically turns the pages for you (and I'm not usually one for hyperbole).

The only problem I had was that I cared enough about the characters to want to see them end up happy, but at the same time, I knew there was really no way for that to happen. Still, Live Girls is one of the more consistent horror novels I have read lately. If you like vampires, you'll love it, and even if you think you're sick to death of them (as I have been for years) give it a try anyway.

Rated by buyers 4 out of 5 stars - LIVE GIRLS
LIVE GIRLS

Live Girls was the very first Ray Garton book I read. Friends who gave the book rave reviews recommended it to me. I must admit I enjoyed the book also.

Ray Gartons writing style is simple and to the point. His writing reminds me a bit of the Richard Laymon technique: Straightforward, tell the story, and keep the reader turning pages. You will not find colorful prose nor in-depth extremely fleshed out characters. What you will find is a fast paced story with just enough colour and pop to keep you reading well into the night.

Live Girls puts a nest of vampires in Time Square NY, working out of an all night peepshow, our nasty villain `Anya' is a beautiful but deadly female vampire. Davey Owens our protagonist stumbles upon the peepshow and our villain, and the story proceeds.

This book seems to have been aimed at a male audience but I'm sure, any fan of the vampire tale will enjoy this read. The story is well paced, action packed and extremely fun.

I give this book a solid 4 star rating.

Rated by buyers 5 out of 5 stars - Wow!
Now this is a vampire story! If you even moderately enjoyed From Dusk Til Dawn, you will love this book. Davey was always a loser, but when he went into a seedy club with a neon sign that read Live Girls, his life would change. Inside were gorgeous, yet slightly pale strippers. What the girls did to him would make him come back to see them again at all costs - and that would include Davey's soul.

The only thing that can save Davey is a broken down police officer who happens to get curious as to what goes on behind the neon sign, and his girlfriend who is willing to put her neck on the line - literally!

Buy this book - it is what all the vampire fans out there have been waiting for.
