Product Description:
A Lesson in Loyalty --
A Master Class in Intrigue

Yelena is a survivor. Kidnapped as a child, held prisoner as a teen, then released to act as a poison taster, she is now a student of magic. But these magic skills place her in imminent danger, and with an execution order on her head, she has no choice but to escape to Sitia, the land of her birth.

But nothing in Sitia is familiar. Not the family to whom she is a stranger. Not the unsettling new facets of her powers. Not the brother who resents her return. As she struggles to understand where she belongs and how to control her powers, a rogue magician emerges -- and Yelena catches his eye.

Suddenly she is embroiled in a situation not of her making. And once again it will be her magical abilities that will either save her life . . . or be her downfall.

Rated by buyers 5 out of 5 stars - Fascinating alterna-world
I've actually just finished the entire Study series (Fire Study comes after Magic Study) and am sorry there isn't another. I'm not usually a fan of books written in the very first person, but the Sitia/Ixia world is addictive and compelling and Yelena is a wonderfully written character. I just wish there had been some kind of epilogue so we could know more about how things panned out after the big finale!

Rated by buyers 3 out of 5 stars - Angieville: MAGIC STUDY
MAGIC STUDY picks up right where Poison Study leaves off. Yelena is on her way south to Sitia on a journey to learn how to control her magic, find her family, and try not to run screaming back to Ixia when, having been in country for only a few days, several rather largish men want to kill her. And one of them turns out to be her brother. Not much love lost between these long lost siblings.

Yelena manages to reach the Citadel alive and begin training with the governing council of mages there. But before long she's neck deep unraveling a plot to kill the Commander and recapture the throne of Ixia. Add to that a rogue mage who is systematically kidnapping and murdering young women across the country, stealing their souls to feed his power. At this point, Yelena and I are both thinking it would be just super to have Valek at her back once more. Where's a deadly assassin when you need him? Fortunately, Yelena's growing abilities come into play. Drawing on her own experiences as Reyad's captive, she is able to draw two of the young women back from the brink of death. Just when she thinks she's gotten her footing in Sitia, a delegation from Ixia comes to the capital. The Ixian entourage includes her old friends and combat trainers Ari and Janco as well as one or two other surprise visitors.

Though not quite as good as Poison Study, I enjoyed this second volume of the trilogy. It was nice to see Yelena holding her own, trusting her instincts, and using the training her friends had given her. I like how she continues to force her way right to the heart of the matter, doing what needs to be done no matter what high-ranking official tells her not to. And I liked how Ms. Snyder maintains Yelena and Valek's relationship, while still acknowledging the complications they face. They both thrive balancing on the knife-edge between life and death. Valek is loyal to the Commander above all. And Yelena won't give up an inch of the freedom she's earned. I'm anxious to read Fire Study (Study, Book 3).

Rated by buyers 5 out of 5 stars - Great Sequel
If you're on the fence about reading Magic Study, you're delight in this sequel will be basically measured upon how much you enjoyed the very first book of the series, Poison Study. I loved Yelena and Valek (and the supporting characters) and couldn't wait to get my hands on this book. As there are several reviews already posted that have good summaries I'll just skip forward to the things I liked and didn't like. The book is very well written and flows easily. The antagonists inspire a great deal of hatred and you feel for the characters and want them to succeed (nothing is worse than reading a book when you couldn't care less!).

I was slightly disappointed with a few things - primarily concerning Leif, Yelena's brother. I just felt as though something could have been drawn further out of his character. I kind of wish that he realized how much he loved and missed his sister rather than "coming to terms" with her new existence in his life. He totally disappeared for nearly the last quarter or so of the book. I understand the underlying meaning of his absence, but I wish that we were reminded on him on occasion. To me, Leif was a huge (if not the hugest) part of Yelena's identity and the reader just forgets about him for awhile. Also, I wish Yelena and Valek would talk a little more, rather than just falling into each other's arms naked. These scenes are never explicit, but the reader only really sees the sexual side of their relationship when they're together.

All in all, this is an excellent second book to the series. Snyder is fast becoming one of my sought-after authors. So, if you liked Poison Study, check out this book.

Rated by buyers 4 out of 5 stars - An easy and addicting Read
While this book will never fall in to the same class as JRR Tolkien's LOTR, Magic Study (a follow up to Maria V Snyder's Poison Study) is a satisfying and addicting read. I should note however that it would be beneficial for you to read the very first book in the series before you pick this one up. Where they give you slight details in this edition the very first one is meatier and will make you long to read this one.

In this edition we rejoin Yelena-our Heroine from Poison Study- In the last leg of her journey to Sitia, she is accompanied by 3rd Magician Iris and the other girls saved from the previous story. Iris leaves her with her lost family and from there we see the many twists that explain why Yelena does the things she does. We also learn some of her history, and other questions that were had in the 1st book are answered (but I shall say that not all of the questions are answered); and as another reviewer stated Her relationship with Valek is reintroduced, but in this book she does seem a little more caught up in her romance with him where it was only hinted at before.

Valek as well as a host of other characters from the old book are brought back in this book; and a good selection of new ones are introduced. We still have the comedic entendres from Ari and Janco but there is also the addition of a fellow student in the Citadel named Dace. We also get a new enemy, a new Boss in First Magician Roze Featherstone, and new prejudices. This edition also gives us a firsthand account-if you can call it that- of Yelena experiencing other trying times, and glimpses of the sadistic and masochistic side of human nature, but she is better able to fight back in this one, than she was in the first.

This book still leaves some questions that were present in the very first book as well as adds some more. For example, we never really find out why Valek is immune to magic, and we also do not find out what Yelena is capable of Magically, we only get a glimmer of a possibility of future greatness, I feel that this is an area that needs to be addressed by the author in the future.

All in all this is an easy read that will get you addicted; it is complex enough to make you long for more but easy enough that you don't have to reread every section to get what the author was trying to tell you the reader, and is a worthy book for lovers of Fantasy, and Romance alike.

I Hope this proved useful :D

Rated by buyers 3 out of 5 stars - Very Good - for a sequel
I really enjoyed Poison Study for it's twists and turns, but particularily the fabulous character development. As a sequel, I found Magic Study to be good but the plot and characters were a little too predictable: Generic Heroine in trouble - said Generic Heroine rescued by star-crossed lover. No matter the situation, Generic Heroine always has the right tool right on hand. This plot was still full of twists and turns, but unlike Poison Study, Magic Study leaves no doubt that Good always wins versus Evil.
