Product Description:
Quincie Morris has never felt more alone. Her parents are dead, and her hybrid-werewolf boyfriend is threatening to embark on a rite of passage that will separate them forever.
Then as she and her uncle are about to unveil their hot vampire-themed restaurant, a brutal murder leaves them scrambling for a chef. Can Quincie transform their newly hired chef into a culinary Dark Lord before opening night? Can he wow the crowd in his fake fangs, cheap cape, and blue contact lenses - or is there more to this earnest face than meets the eye? As human and preternatural forces clash, a deadly love triangle forms, and the line between predator and prey begins to blur. Who's playing whom? And how long can Quincie play along before she loses everything? Tantalize marks Cynthia Leitich Smith's delicious debut as a preeminent author of dark fantasy.

I was disappointed by this story as I thought the premise sounded so interesting. For the story to fall so flat ... I did make it all the way through the book and had to take a moment or two when I was finished to sort out what the heck had actually happened.
Quincie is not exactly a normal high-schooler in Austin, Texas. Her parents died when she was small and her childhood sweetheart is a half werewolf. On top of that she has inherited her parent's restaurant and is almost too responsible.
Despite her apparent responsiblility in helping to run a restaurant, Quincie makes some terribly poor decisions. She's drunk for the second half of the book for example.
The writing is staccato and doesn't flow as it should and even Kieran (Quincie's best friend & childhood sweetheart) who is the most dynamic character feels static and unlikeable. The story ends abruptly and badly in my humble opinion. :(

The very first half of this book was really good. Quince is your average girl who is in love with a half werewolf who were pretty sure loves her back. She lives with her uncle, they are remodeling their families old italian restaurant and turning it into a vampire themed restaurant. The chef of the restaurant gets murdered a few weeks before opening and they have to find a new chef. (all of that is basically on that back cover).
It was pretty good for the very first 100 or 200 pages, so why only three stars?
If you like books with endings, this is not for you. The end of this book is just that, the end, she stopped writing. I didn't feel like anything was resolved, it was neither happy nor sad. It was just simply over. If she made a sequal I would consider giving this book another star, but since there is no sequal, this book gets three stars for a nice thought. I honestly don't think it was worth the money.

This was one of the most disappointing books I've ever read. The characters are incredibly shallow, the dialogue is the lamest, there's absolutely no real romance,no suspense or horror. And no matter how hard you try,you just can't get soaked into the book because it's so superficial and shallow.I don't recommend it to anyone.

I liked the story at first! it seemed to be a good story. But at some point, the author needed a bit of more imagination on what the reader's would be looking and expecting in this type of book, with the obvious competition of the famous saga going around. Im not one to compare authors, but i just can't believe how tantalize ended. I seriously kept looking till the hardcover end for a prologue or something. If you'd like a nice read, go ahead, it's full of suspense. But it's doesn't give you a clear point on who killed Vaggio, what happened with Bradley or if Quince & Kieren gave love a chance. That for me, ruined it all.

On a recent drive back to Austin from El Paso (a long drive if you've never done it), my wife and I took turns driving, the passenger reading aloud from Tantalize, something neither of us had done before. We found the book to be a page turner, as well as helping us chew up the miles of asphalt. The only times we took breaks was when we were stopping for gas or food. When we arrived home, we still had about 25 pages left to read and couldn't wait to unpack the car so we could go in on the bed and finish the story, still reading aloud. Way to go Cynthia. You really help make a long drive much more enjoyable as we were able to share and enjoy your book.
