_Grimericks_ is a Halloween hoot, but not for your "littlest" ones--unless they love being scared out of their socks.

The introductory limerick gives fair warning:

"Dear Reader, please lend me your ear.
If ghosts, ghouls, and goblins you fear,
don't open this book.
No--don't even look!
There are spooky things hiding in here."

Amazon's photo of the book cover shows you what to expect in the way of illustrations, and that's why I ordered this book for our library's Halloween collection. Grimly's grim, grotesque graphics for _Grimericks_ is the kind of artwork some of our young readers love.

My favorite illustration accompanies the following grimerick:

"Wanda the witchling was wary
of anything fuzzy or hairy.
Beavers and bats,
Gorillas and cats,
and cows were especially scary."

(Somehow a demonic giraffe got mixed into this motley crew around little Wanda's bed. Don't ask me why he's there, but those soulless eyes...)

Pearson's limericks are as entertaining as Grimly's illustrations are ghastly. My favorite grimerick is:

"When Howard the goblin caught sight
of Gertrude the gremlin one night,
he fell in a swoon
that lasted till June.
It must have been love at very first sight."

Grimly must have been especially fond of that one, too. It's one of the sweetest drawings of the lot. Howard looks downright love-sick, clutching his flower, and Gertrude is the cutest, most adorable thing you've ever seen, at least in this book, even if she does have a horn protruding from her forehead. (MaryLou Jones is another thing altogether--yuck!)

Technically, this isn't a "Halloween" book because the Library of Congress lists the subject headings for _Grimericks_ as "Limericks, juvenile" and "Children's poetry, American." But, it's jam-packed with gremlins and goblins, ghoulies and ghosts, witches and other nasties. If that isn't a list of Halloween horrors, then what has this silly holiday come to?

This is a neat addition to a Halloween collection, but not for the "Youngest Generation." If you and yours are ready for it, all I can say is that for silliness and giggles galore, _Grimericks_ is definitely worth 5 stars from gobbysreviews.

ENJOY!

Rated by buyers 5 out of 5 stars - A Wonderfully Spooky New Halloween Collection
What is a grimerick? That is the question. A grimerick is a limerick with a dash of grim. Add a few guffaws, giggles, and a bit of spook juice, and mix it all together with a funny bone, and...voila! A grimerick. But a grimerick is quite more than that. If you read one without very first looking under the bed, locking all the doors, or turning the lights down very low, you may just spook yourself into subsequent week.

Susan Pearson has written 20 individual grimericks that will keep young readers laughing through the night, and maybe checking under their beds every few minutes. Each grimerick is about a different monster, goblin, ghoul, or ghost, and features a short little grimerick, with an accompanying illustration by the marvelously talented Gris Grimly. Grimly's illustrations bring the grimericks to life, while Pearson's wonderfully funny and spooky limericks will give readers the giggles. A wonderfully spooky new book that the whole family can read together.
