Product Description:
Back in the saddle as sheriff of Tamarack County, Cork O'Connor is lured to the nearby Ojibwe reservation on what appears to be a routine call -- only to become the target of sniper fire. Soon after, he's called to investigate a mutilated body found perched above the raging waters of Mercy Falls. The victim is Eddie Jacoby, a Chicago businessman negotiating an unpopular contract between his management firm and the local Indian casino.
Sparks fly when the wealthy Jacoby family hires a beautiful private investigator to consult on the case. But once Cork discovers an old and passionate tie between one of the Jacoby sons and his own wife, Jo, he begins to suspect that dark, personal motives lurk behind recent events. Murder, greed, sex, and jealousy hide around every corner in this maze of danger. But somewhere beneath the turbulent Mercy Falls lies the truth -- and Cork is determined to find it....

If you've read some of the previous reviews, you know that people were upset with the non-ending. With Cork getting into a truck and heading north we have the beginning of 'The Fugitive' without the train wreck. Actually, there is a metaphoric train wreck but all in all the story is pretty good.
Cork is called to a house on the Rez and by luck his deputy is shot by some one who was aiming for Cork. The subsequent day the body of a guy who works for a casino management company and has been trying to get the local Anishinabbe Casino as a customer. Turns out the guy is a real sleeze and it's not that strange that some one wanted him dead. He does turn out to be the old squeeze of Cork's wife from back in Law School.
All of a sudden there are bad guys/gals coming out of the woodwork (or the lakes and forests) and there are bullets flying and bombs or non- bombs being planted in people cars. So Cork sends Jo and the girls off to visit with her sister Rose and her husband in Evanston, Ill which just happens to be the hometown of her old boyfriend. Got that.
Well with so many people from the boyfriend's (Ben Jacoby) family being killed off that the father of the clan sets up an open contract on Cork and he has to go on the road for the safety of his family. I can't decide whether this makes a good movie for "Lifetime" or "Hallmark". Does Cork get away, are the kids going to be OK, is Jo pregnant, will his daughters get into Northwestern and Notre Dame? Well we'll just have to wait for the subsequent book in the series to find out what happens.

This is the 5th book in this series by Krueger. While the plot is good, at times it wanders and is difficult to connect all the dots. However it finishes strong and does eventually pulol the loose ends together in a satisfactory fashion. I like Kruegers writing style and his characters are believable and enjoyable. This book will entertain if nothing else!

I picked it up basically for the title because I thought a waterfall sounded cool. I would have given it 4 stars if only the ending was different. It was my very first Krueger book and therefore also very first of Corcoran O'Connor series. I liked the character development and relationships and the strong ties to a geographic region and culture. A little flirty at times, but never over the top.

I happen to pick up one of Mr. Krueger's books because it seemed like something that I would like to read.
Since then, I have read every book written by William Kent Krueger.
As every one of his books, "Mercy Falls" will captive you and you will not be able to put it down.
His writing makes you feel as if you're living within the story.
Believe me...when you're done, you'll be hunting for more William Kent Krueger's books!!!
