Editor's Notes and Comments:

Product Description:
' The Law of Similars is fast-paced and absorbing. Few writers can manipulate a plot with Bohjalian's grace and power.'-The New York Times Book Review

From the number one bestselling author of Midwives comes this riveting medical thriller about a lawyer, a homeopath, and a tragic death.  When one of homeopath Carissa Lake's patients falls into an allergy-induced coma, possibly due to her prescribed remedy, Leland Fowler's office starts investigating the case.

But Leland is also one of Carissa's patients, and he is begining to realize that he has fallen in love with her.  As love and legal obligations collide, Leland comes face-to-face with an ethical dilemma of enormous proportions.  Graceful, intelligent, and suspenseful, The Law of Similars is a powerful examination of the links between hope and hubris, love and deception.

Amazon.com Review:
In Chris Bohjalian's fine follow-up to Midwives, individual judgment and the unconventional again clash with the medical and legal forces of tradition. In rural Vermont, two years after his wife's sudden death, an exhausted state's attorney can hope for little but a quiet life with his 4-year-old daughter. Leland Fowler's only goal is a cure for the common cold--his own, that is, which has dragged on for months. As it turns out, his appointment with the town's only homeopath will set to rights his physical and emotional symptoms. At least for a while.

Alas, another of Carissa Lake's patients isn't quite so lucky. Despite her warning that Richard Emmons not go off his prescription drugs, he does exactly that. In fact, during an asthma attack, he takes the homeopathic law of similars--the belief that 'like cures like'--to an entirely new level. This tragedy embroils Carissa in an investigation of her practice and forces Leland into a decision that is to alter not only her life but his:
Upstairs, my daughter slept. And for a long time we sat on the floor before the tree, neither of us saying a word, as I worked out in my mind exactly what I would have needed to prosecute this case if a summer cold had not lasted into the fall, and I had not met Carissa Lake. Once I knew, nothing seemed quite so hopeless, and I began to sketch aloud for her exactly what we would want to create in the morning, and exactly what we would want to destroy.
Chris Bohjalian is an artist of the small but seismic instant. As this gripping novel proves, he knows all too well the awful daring of a moment's surrender. --Siobhan Carson

Rated by buyers 4 out of 5 stars - A good read; not his best...
I've read nearly everything Bohjalian has written to date. He continues with the exceptional method of writing in this book, yet it doesn't quite measure up to his others. If you haven't read any Bohjalian yet, this may not be the one to start with. Try Midvies (5 stars!) or The Buffalo Soliders (5 stars!). I just had some problems with the main character (when exactly did he fall in love? missed that part). However, the writing is great and the premise is awesome. Learned alot about homeopathy and that was interesting. You always learn something in a Bohjalian novel and this is no exception. I still finished the story quickly, so it wasn't bad! I'm still a huge fan; this just wasn't my favorite.

Rated by buyers 4 out of 5 stars - Good, but not the best Bohjalian novel...
I've read all of Chris Bohjalian's novels, and really love his work! Similars is good, but ultimately far from his best...though Bohjalian at his worst is still worth reading.
(Except Tran Sister Radio- avoid at all costs!)

Rated by buyers 1 out of 5 stars - Freaked Out
The protagonist widower lawyer "falls in love" with his homeopath.

The ironic quotes are there because:

1. The only description we get is that she has nice socks.
2. During their conversations, she never says anything to him that's outside the professional realm. Even after he tries wooing her with thoughtful, meaningful gifts for over a week, she still gives one-word answers to his questions.

So I kept reading, expecting an explanation... Is the guy dreaming? Is this one of those books in which the main character turns out to be a psychopath? Those are the only premises I can come up with that could explain a man becoming enamored of a woman without finding her attractive, lingering over a flirtatious phrase, something!

And suddenly, it's Christmas Eve and our protagonist is performing the "c" word on his homeopath, through her undergarments, and describing what he finds down there in great detail.

WHAT THE HELL!?!?

I must admit that I'm the kind of reader who prefers her smut separate from her leisure fiction, but this is a little ridiculous. I can handle a little sex scene if it's presented in a real way.

I put the book down for good and plan to donate it somewhere. ::sigh::

Rated by buyers 3 out of 5 stars - Ho hum homeopathy
A 3+ really. Maybe even a 4-. This book will keep you entertained if you are rather easy to entertain. I liked Carissa Lake, homeopath and quirky lady. You wish these people well; and recognize the trials and tribulations of living in a small town where everyone knows everyone else's business. Nice portrayal of that life. But somehow the story never catches fire.

Rated by buyers 2 out of 5 stars - Disappointment
So disappointed. I couldn't put down Midwives and thoroughly enjoyed Buffalo Soldiers. Both had realistic characters and thought-provoking situations. But this story felt like another author's work, or pehaps one of his earlier works. I even double checked the print date. Sure, the well-developed ethical dilemmas are there, but his main character was so pathetic and unrealistic. Still can't believe Bohjalian had the widower fall so hard and fast for a woman he barely knows, and I could do without the smutty description under the Xmas tree. Chris, you can do so much better!
