Rated by buyers 1 out of 5 stars - Amateur Writing at its Best...
I found this book in Barnes and Noble in their "Discounted" section of the store. Now I know why. The book started out interestingly enough, then it became comical--akin to reading a Stephanie Plum novel. I thought, "Okay, let's go with it," since I am unfamiliar with Stuart Woods' work. However, it became evident this storyline was not going to do anything but entertain the simple minded, if that. The story never climaxed, did not have any compelling plot, and at the very end of the story, it suddenly stopped. The character was arrested and everyone shook hands and went home. Big deal! If you insist on reading this book, borrow it. Spending even $5.98 (what I paid) for this book would be idiotic now that you know what a senseless novel this is. Because the storyline was so superficial you would've thought an elementary school student co-authored the book.

Rated by buyers 1 out of 5 stars - Huge disappointment
I have always enjoyed Stuart Woods books as his work is usually very entertaining. This one, however, was a big disappointment. I think he just phoned it in.

Rated by buyers 3 out of 5 stars - Weak Ending to Fun Read
Picked up this paperback in the airport. Fun read for flight time. Had never read S. Woods before...enjoyed plot twists - was so anticipating a clever ending. Didn't happen.

Rated by buyers 1 out of 5 stars - Awful
Absolutely awful. I kept waiting for something to happen and nothing ever did. I thought my copy was missing pages at the end because the ending was so bad. Don't waste your time!

Rated by buyers 3 out of 5 stars - A good story although bland for thriller fans
This review is for the Signet paperback, May 2007, 375 pages. SHORT STRAW was on the USA Today's Top 150 Best-Selling books list for eight weeks reaching the peak position of 43. Stuart Woods has 26 novels on this best-seller list.

Ed Eagle, a successful lawyer, wakes up uncharacteristically late with a hangover on the very day he is hosting an inauguration party for his new offices. By the time he sorts things out, he realizes his wife, Barbara, had drugged him to assure he slept late so she could escape to Mexico with over a million dollars of his money. Ed acts fast. With just minutes to spare, he prevents Barbara from cleaning out his brokerage accounts too.

Ed sends a private detective to Mexico to find his wife, which he does quickly, but Barbara shoots him. So Ed sends another PI to rescue the very first and find his wife. The plot continues with the two private detectives chasing Barbara around Mexico. Meanwhile, Ed discovers Barbara has a contract out on him so she can get all his assets and collect on his life insurance.

Although SHORT STRAW is listed as an action thriller, it is not the over-the-top, nail-biting, super-hero type. The plot is believable, the characters plausible and everyone makes mistakes. Although many scenes happen in Mexico, the settings are either imaginary or unremarkable. It's a good story, but bland for thriller fans.
