This is one of those books you wonder, why did I read this? It's not a bad book, but the plot is thin and a bit slow, the characters are mostly two-dimensional, and the action is very cursory and superficial. Stuart Woods has been writing suspense novels for years, and I think he's gotten to the point where the writing itself goes very quickly for him. As a result, there's nothing like Chiefs, with its depth of characters and historical framework. Instead, there's a thin suspense plot with a main character who's killing off terrorists, and the FBI and CIA are pursuing the guy across New York City.

Woods has a couple of interesting characteristics as a writer which seem to indicate, at this point, laziness. For one thing, he likes a particular brand of pistol (Keltec), so he arms all of his characters with guns from this one company. To speed up the action, whenever things happen in the book there's no delays. So if someone wants to buy a house, they take minutes, whereas in real life it's a process that takes weeks, usually. It seems as if little goes into the characters or the plotting any more.

All of that said, this is still a fun book if you've been reading the Holly Barker series of books. It's a bit much to imagine her joining the CIA, and the author seems to be the only person, other than Tom Clancy, who thinks the CIA can find their posteriors with both hands and a map. One curiosity: CIA agents wander the streets of New York City waving ID cards, and no one says anything. Did I miss something, or isn't the CIA supposed to stay outside of the United States? Oh well, no matter, it's still a good bit of popcorn, perhaps worthwhile on a cross-country plane flight.

Rated by buyers 1 out of 5 stars - Terrible
Not only do I hate this book, just from reading it partially I hate the author as well. This book is a sad endeavor to promote the Palestinian genocide. As if we didn't get enough of that through other media.

I hated Teddy Faye right away. I couldn't wait to see him die. But towards the middle of the book, I realized he wasn't being painted as the villian but some type of anti-hero. So I skipped to the end, and read they let him go.

I didn't even get the guy really. A liberal Zionist. Thats what our government is, so why are they working to stop him? Well, in the end they didn't, so atleast that part was realistic.

The Margin
Imagine--you're in an airport waiting to board in LA, your destination New York for a one-day business meeting. You've got a lot of sitting-around-doing-nothing time on your hands with flying time, layovers, and cab rides you need something to read, something you can get lost in. Hurry down to the book and magazine store and buy IRON ORCHID. It is an easy read, one you won't want to put down until The End.
Teddy Fay, the bad guy in BLOOD ORCHID, that you thought was dead, isn't. As a matter of fact he's back with a vengence killing off enemies of the U.S.. What's wrong with that you ask? What is wrong is that the CIA is getting the blame, which isn't setting well with the President.
Holly Barker has been recruited into the CIA, for obvious reasons if you've read the other ORCHIDS, and before she can graduate from training she and other recruits are summoned to assist in tracking down the illusive, well disguised Teddy Fay.
The book isn't deep, don't look for many challenges, but it's action and fast paced.
