This is the 2nd book in the Flower Shop Mystery series. Abby Knight has been asked by her cousin, Jillian, to be a bridesmaid. Abby, not quite thrilled, agrees and will also provide the flowers for the ceremony. Honestly, Abby is more interested in receiving the paycheck to keep her business afloat than being a bridesmaid. Abby has doubts about the wedding anyway because Jillian is known for getting engaged annually and dumping her fiance before the wedding day.
Not only does Abby have to wear a hideous dress, she also has to see her former fiance, who is the groom's brother. Still, Abby wants to do the right thing and tries her best to make sure her cousin gets married. The bride and groom walking down the aisle soon becomes doubtful as one of the groomsmen goes missing and the another is found dead. Despite Abby promising not to meddle, she soon finds herself in the middle of the investigation.
I really like this series. I like Abby Knight as a main character. She's a young woman trying to move on with her life by following her dreams. She struggles with her mom (who really wants her married with children) and living in her brothers' shadows (they are extremely successful with families of their own). She lives with her best friend, Nikki, and her friend's cat, Simon. She recently met Marco, the owner of the bar across the street from her shop. Her one flaw is she can't keep her promise of not meddling. From this, she finds herself being kidnapped, stalked and threatened. I will continue to read the rest of the series.

This was an amusing enough mystery, except for the jarring racial references. The characters keep describing Asian people as "Oriental," which has been an offensive term for at least, what, 15 years? And the stock young-girl-forced-into-prostitution literally has her speech represented by swapping the l's and the r's. This book needs an update for 2008, but I can't quite understand how it was written this way in 2004.

I just stumbled across this Flower Shop Mystery series and have found the very first two books delightful. I look forward to the subsequent ones.

Many lighthearted mysteries are described as funny when they're simply sweet and amusing. This one is really _funny_.
As with so many cozy mysteries, the story is only nominally about an amateur taking on a mystery case than it is about the characters in the protagonist's life. In this case, it's law school dropout Abby, who is trying to make her florist's shop a success. More for financial reasons (she's doing the flowers) than familial affection, Abby also needs to help her dreadfully annoying cousin deal with disappearing members of her bridal party.
If you're expecting a regular cast of "characters," you won't be disappointed. Everyone is slightly over the top, from Abby's artist mother to uber-preppy cousin Jillian. The story is believable enough -- that is, I can buy into the reasons that Abby gets herself involved. Good pacing, setting, storytelling, all of that.
But really, the strength of this book isn't the mystery (which is okay), but the active sense of humour the author shows. She won't give Jasper Fforde or Connie Willis competition for the "laugh out loud hysterically on a plane with no embarrassment forever" award... but it it sweetly amusing, in a never-mean way (even though Jillian is a jerk, she's an obliviously funny jerk).
If you're looking for a few hours of escapism, this is a 5-star candidate.
You can definitely read this series out of order. I did, and I didn't feel as though was coming in too late.

Really enjoyed this story, it was just as good as the very first book. Lighter reading than other books, but that's part of what I enjoyed about it. Can't wait to read what happens to Abby in the subsequent book.
