...but definately movie material! I disagree with the critic review above from Publishing houses Weekly. The book DID NOT move at a snail's pace and the ending WAS a surprise!
If you like stories from the Roman era with noble leading characters like those found in the Gladiator or Ben-Hur then this book is for you. If you don't care for this type of character you will enjoy the intrigue and the action-good battles, fighting scenes, mystery and suspense!
Mr Larkin does a superb job with plotting, raising the stakes, recaping the tension and giving us a hero with an intellegent thought pattern and believable humanity. He puts his hero in a jam over and over again. This is the stuff of good writing!
Some other characters we know from ancient history were not disrespected in Mr Larkin's writting or portrayed as blithering idiots and villains as is done in much of today's writing. I appreciate this greatly!!
Dear Mr. Patrick Larkin
....You are an excellent writer. I was moved by the story and it shall remain a permanent part of my library of good books. I will recommend it to everyone I can. Now that you know I will do this for you I want you to do something for me...write another one!!

It was a competent thriller, but it was much more ordinary than the blurbs had led me to expect. Kevin Anderson called it the Roman equivalent of The Name of the Rose. If it had been such a book, I would have expected that the Library of Alexandria would have played a central role, and that the book would have delivered the secrets of the ancient mystery cults. I'd have been satisfied with the keys to the cult of Mithras at the very least. So since it didn't meet my expectations, I'll give it a grade of C.

I can say without hesitation that this is the worst book that I have ever read. If you are considering buying it - don't. Nothing more needs to be said.

I bought this book when my daughter was born. I found it in the bargain box of the pharmacy across from the hospital. She was there for a week. This book helped me during that time to temporarily get my mind off of the situation.
The story is about a man named Lucius Aurelius Valens. He was a Tribune in the Roman army. What I liked most about his character was that when times were tough, he stuck to his core values and chose to do the right thing even if it was the most difficult. Something that is missing in many people today.
Some of the characters in this book later became key figures in the Holy Bible's New Testament. These characters were nicely woven into the fabric of the story without being spelled out for the reader who they were.
Historical fiction is one of my favorite genres. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys this class of work.

I enjoyed this book very much and could barely put it down.
I can't verify the historical accuracy of the book. However, I enjoyed all the plot twists and turns and found it to be a great adventure which included moral dilemma. I enjoyed the descriptions of life in the times of the emperor Tiberius, the time of Jesus' birth and life.
I highly recommend this book.
