A gypsy curse that works.

When a man kills someone and is not too repentant about it, he is cursed to lose weight.

Being very overweight to start with, not a big deal, but then he realises whatever he does or whatever he eats he continues to get smaller.

Desperately, he tries to do something about it.

An ok book, that is about it.

Rated by buyers 4 out of 5 stars - Intriguing Topic, Not Quite Compelling
The very first roughly half of Stephen King's novel "Thinner" is a very interesting read, as the protagonist is cursed by a Gypsy and keeps losing weight at a frightening pace. Also, that main character also finds out that some of his friends were included in the curse, and their maladies are even more frightening than his.

However, when the ever-thinning man sets out to find the gypsy who cursed him, the book seems to get a bit bogged down and not as compelling, as it just turns into one long chase scene. Plus, for almost the entire end portion of the book (excluding the end coda), the protagonist does nearly nothing, instead relying on a friend to do his dirty work for him.

This is the third Richard Bachmann (King's ill-fated alias) novel I have read (after "The Running Man" and "The Long Walk"), and I think I am beginning to understand why those books did not go over as well as King's other works. Whereas "King" novels weave a very engrossing story around a host of characters that are, in all honesty, probably a bit over-explained, the "Bachmann" books focus on a simple idea (i.e. running, walking, losing weight) and don't include as many interesting characters (with the exception of certain competitors in "Long Walk).

So, if you are a Stephen King fan who will get around to all his novels eventually, this rather short read will entertain you for awhile, but may let you down towards the end (although not at the VERY end, which is quite good). If you are just a general reader of fantasy fiction, I would advise you to gravitate more toward "King" novels and save "Bachmann" for a later date.

Rated by buyers 4 out of 5 stars - too wordy at times but a great read
I thought this was a well written book overall. It gets wordy at times through the book but not to bad. I really think the ending suited the orginal crime it came back to him one way or another and instead of live life without his wife and daughter he made the choice to die with them. Even the italian thug who helps billy gets what he deserved in the end. I watched the movie along time before I read the book and let me tell you the book is so much better in my opinion.

Rated by buyers 4 out of 5 stars - Better then you think
I thought this was a good book. I don't think it drags on like people say, although im the kind of person that likes details after details. I haven't read many Stephen King books so I can't really judge it based on others(which seems to be what reviewers are doing).

"A lot of guys don't believe what they are seeing, especially if it gets in the way of what they think or believe"(Page 220)

So for the story, its very good, and a very original idea. After running over an old lady from a gypsy group, her creepy father places a curse on the man who did it, as well as others who help him get out of surving time in jail. The curse gradually makes him thinner day after day no matter how much his body takes in. People begin to look in wonder at the man who was, before, overweight, and now thin as a stick. Problem is who will believe that a gypsy put a curse on him and help him get revenge on the evil gypsies before he thins himself to death? Read the book and find out.

Rated by buyers 4 out of 5 stars - The Best of the Bachman Books
"Thinner" is the most "King-like" of the Richard Bachman books. It's a fast-paced, horrific roller-coaster ride through a nightmare worse than any Atkins or Weight Watchers diet craze. Stephen King, writing as Richard Bachman, winks at the reader by having the characters comment that what's happening is "like out of a Stephen King novel." It's a fun but gruesome book that will keep you up for a night or two.
