It's impossible to read Kirkwood and not beg for more. After reading P.S. Your Cat is Dead, I became a fan forever and went on to read Some Kind of Hero, looking forward to what he had in store for us next. Unfortunately, Kirkwood died in 1989. I feel saddened by the loss of such genius in the literary world.

When I was a boy, maybe 12 or 13, my mother told me I should read this book. For once I listened to her and I did. It was quite an experience. Little another reviewer stated, the book drags you in and captivates you until it is done.
My mom is gone now, but I will always remember her wanting me to read this. One of the best books I have ever read in my life.
C'mon Amazon, find this book and put it back on the shelf so we can get it. ;-)

This book just pulls you in, one second you'll be laughing as hard as possible and turn the page and tears will be streaming down your face. It grabs you by the heart and you can't help but to want everything to work out. To this very day I'll find myself wondering how Eddie's (the main character) doing. It's a must-read for anyone.

ever since i read "p.s. your cat is dead" (by the same author), i became a james kirkwood fan. he's witty, his writing flows and he creates characters you can't help but care about (i really hate reading a book about characters for whom i feel nothing). since then (about 10 years now), i always search bookstores--right after the massive stephen king section) to see if he's written something new (he hasn't--i just keep hoping).
i did an out of print search to get this one. LOVED IT. i read it cover to cover in one day because it completely sucked me in. it's an excellent story with compelling characters. kirkwood also has a real gift with irony, humour and humanity.
KIRKWOOD: IF BY CHANCE YOU'RE READING THIS, PLEASE WRITE MORE! YOU HAVE SOME DIE HARD FANS OUT HERE (god, i hope this isn't a "p.s. your author's dead" situation!).

I noticed that this is another of James Kirkwood's novels that is out of print. For any of you searching for his work, include this novel in your search. Although I read it almost 25 years ago in college, I still remember the way it made me feel and the emotions that it dragged up from me. This book will make you laugh and cry, value friendship above all and remind you of the horrors of war. If you have not read James Kirkwood, you are missing out on one of the best authors of the last 30 years! If you enjoy John Irving, you will most likely enjoy James Kirkwood.
