Product Description:
Felix Castor is a freelance exorcist, and London is his stamping ground. It may seem like a good ghostbuster can charge what he likes and enjoy a hell of a lifestyle--but there's a risk: Sooner or later he's going to take on a spirit that's too strong for him. While trying to back out of this ill-conceived career, Castor accepts a seemingly simple ghost-hunting case at a museum in the shadowy heart of London--just to pay the bills, you understand. But what should have been a perfectly straightforward exorcism is quickly turning into the Who Can Kill Castor First Show, with demons and ghosts all keen to claim the big prize. That's OK: Castor knows how to deal with the dead. It's the living who piss him off...

If you like noir detective stories or supernatural tales then this book is for you! I was always a huge Nero Wolfe fan growing up and then recently I started getting into fantasy stories as well so Mike Carey's Felix Castor is everything I've always wanted in a character! He's got the charm of Archie Goodwin and the power of Harry Potter (well, nearly... and if Harry was a little more raw and grown up). This book is the very first of the series too, so it's the right place to start. Having read this and the subsequent two books I'm on the edge of my seat for the fourth.

I don't expect much from the urban horror genre (or supernatural thriller genre, or whatever you'd like to label it) because I have been burned plenty of times in the past by weakly written stories. So, it was with mounting pleasure that I turned the pages of this smashing debut by Mike Carey. It has everything you'd expect from an urban horror tale--only with better writing, a wry sense of humour and a grittiness and weight that I don't find often in fantasy novels. I found it a perfect balance of the required elements and an outstanding read. Now, I'm on the lookout for the sequel VICIOUS CIRCLE.
Recommended for lovers of crime mixed with the occult.

I picked this book up because it was 1) an intriguing sounding Urban Fantasy and 2) read by Michael Kramer who I had just enjoyed reading Emma Bull's Territory. The English accents don't sound quite right but I enjoyed the book so much that I wasn't particularly bothered. I would suggest that any person who is more knowledgeable about English accents should listen to a sample on Audible before committing. I know how I can feel when someone gets an accent I know well wrong-- anywhere from amused to fingers on a blackboard-- so an accent can be a deal breaker.
Anyway, the hero who is something between a PI and an Exorcist is wonderfully snarky as he tries to determine why a ghost is haunting a document depository in a London building. The story starts with an unpleasantness at a children's birthday party and ultimately includes such wonderful things as a demon trapped in a human body confined to an insane asylum, an incubus, a number of ghosts as well as live civil servants. I hesitate to mention Jim Butcher's Dresden Files because I like this book a whole lot better, but there is a certain likeness. However Carey's female characters are more fully fleshed out in my opinion.
There are more books on the way in this series including Vicious Circle already available and upcoming Dead Men's Boots:(Felix Castor Novel 3)

I enjoyed this book a good bit. I liked the main character and felt he was well developed. The story flowed well and the action was great. The surprises were good.
Worth reading.

I generally dislike graphic novels, so was not at all sure that I would enjoy this book, since the author had only written graphic novels previously. I'm glad I took a chance on it; it's entertaining, original and very well written indeed. I was delighted by the wry humor; I am not a person who often laughs out loud, but several times, this book surprised me sufficiently to trigger a guffaw (a dainty one, of course, but still a guffaw). The characters and world are original, likeable, AND believable, no mean feat in fantasy fiction. The minute I finished it I ran to the book store to get the subsequent installment in hardback. No higher endorsement can be given, when you're as naturally cheap as I am. ;)
