This is my very first experience with this series and I'm not planning to pick up another of these tedious volumes. In fact, I could not finish this one. I think the book failed by trying to combine Peyton Place, Judge Judy, Ellery Queen, and a family sit com all into one piece of work. There were so many subplots and detractors, that I lost the thread of the story. Not to mentioned that it dragged. After chapter eleven, the reader only knew of two detached legs and two detached hands without any other clues to the crime. For me, there was not enough action and too much verbiage to make it worth the effort.

In long series, the characters often develop more intense personal lives as the books roll out. In this series, I am fascinated that not just Deb'rah changes and becomes deeper, but so does Colleton County, the rural North Carolina setting of the books. Urbanization, gentrification, corporate farming, immigration, race relations...they're fun whodunits, but also a little slice of sociological observation.

Very interesting mystery. Learned about farming in a location I was not aware. I have enjoyed the Judge Knott series by Maron. The stories are well written.

I just finished this book last night and am about to start another Margaret Maron book. I really love her writing and characters. I just discovered Margaret Maron and have only read her Deborah Knott series so far. "Hard Row" was a very good read and the solution to the crime came as a real shock. Definitely worth your time.

This is a good addition to a good series. Maron does a good job of keeping her characters and local realistic while spinning a good story.
