Product Description:
Agent Pendergast has become one of crime fiction's most endearing characters. His greatest enemy is one who has stalked him all of his life, his cunning and diabolical brother Diogenes. And Diogenes has thrown down the gauntlet. Now, several of the people closest to Pendergast are viciously murdered, and Pendergast is framed for the deeds. On the run from federal authorities with only the help of his old friend NYPD Lieutenant Vincent D' Agosta, Pendergast must stop his brother. But how can he stop a man that is his intellectual equal - one who has had 20 years to plan the world's most horrendous crime?

I have read every book writen by Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child, as well as their siblings and solo pieces. I greatly enjoy the characters in this series, but was disappointed in this particular book. It took a very long time for me to "get into" the book basically because of the pace set at the beginning. Midway through the book it did pick up, and I did enjoy the story by the ending. I wouldn't write this one off the shelf because it still was enjoyable. However, comparitively this was my less favorite of the series.

Nonstop action, mystery, and suspense right up to a satisfying and surprising end. These are protagonists we have come to know and feel comfortable with, characters that do not disappoint. Pendergast and D'Agosta take risks, uncover exasperating secrets, and have one mesmerizing hellacious adventure. Thankfully the authors have now added some adult romance to the mix! Yah! How this has not been made into a movie is beyond me.

A cousin introduced me to this writing team with their very first book, Relic, and I was hooked. However, all through this series, I have watched with growing dismay as our hero, Special Agent Pendergast becomes a more and more improbable character. The man is brilliant, charming, debonair, rich, sensitive, deadly and in this book, verging on the edge of becoming a cartoon.
Please, someone give Preston and Child a copy of their very first book and tell them firmly, this is how it's done! Unless you are a rabid Pendergast fan, pass on this one and try a James Rollins book instead.

Way back when, I read Relic and Reliquary but really couldn't remember them well. Recently, one of the members of our book club recommended I read Chamber of Curiosities, Brimstone, and Dance of Death -- sort of a trilogy. Each story has totally captured my imagination and I'm disappointed when they end.
"Dance of Death" was exceptionally well written and, unlike some books of the genre, not dumbed-down. Of course this book, and the others, is not for everyone and I have had to call on my dictionary at times but now I know what a porte co-chere is and I plan on using "nugatory" in a conversation - hopefully soon.
If the actor Michael Rennie was still living, he'd be my choice to play Agent Pendergast. But, like so many others, making a movie out of such an outstanding book might be a horrible mistake although "(The) Relic" is listed as "outstanding" in my TCM Movie Guide.
Congratulations to the Preston/Child collaboration for another fascinating story.

Good as a stand alone thriller/suspense/crime fiction read. Even better if you have read the previous Agent Pendergast novels.
