Product Description:
Elizabeth Goodweather and her husband built a rewarding life in the hills and hollows of their adopted Appalachian home. But now Elizabeth is alone, her husband tragically killed, her children grown, the land around her filled with customs and beliefs she cannot share. It’s still a good life–tending the small herb and flower business–but Elizabeth’s fragile peace is about to be shattered.
Cletus Gentry vanished while hunting ginseng in the hills–and his mother is sure the childlike man was murdered. As Elizabeth retraces Cletus’s last wanderings, she will discover that a killer has been waiting all the while in the coves and hollows near her farm for her to see the light…and then come willingly to her own death.

This book so accurately describes the area, people, and way of life. I've lived in this area all my life and it's so comforting to find a book written about the Appalachian people that doesn't describe us in the sterotypical way of most "southern" novels. The only reason I didn't give the book 5 stars is a personal preference. I feel like the author is a little harsh and over the top on the religion emphasis. Even though there are snakehandlers in this region it's very rare. Also, not all "believers" in the mountains are as fanatical as they appear in the book. Again, that's a personal thing. I will continue the series and am delighted to have found a local author who is trustworthy with the pen. If you want an accurate portrayal of the mountain people and land (while enjoying a good mystery) I suggest you rush right out and buy this one!

I decided to start this series, I have recently moved to this area, and I thought it may be fun to read about my new home. It was!
I liked the characters very much, and the author is great at describing the people and the feel of the area. Also the author is right on describing the beauty of this wonderful part of America.
I gave it a four rather than a five only because I felt the end was rushed, the stories that I were wading through trying to figure out the mystery, just kind of fell into place a little to neatly and a little to quick. However, I look forward to reading her other books, I really did enjoy this one enough to push me to read her others. If you are looking for a good mystery, with a different setting, this is for you. Again, she really does give the read a feel for this area.

I would have given this book 5 stars had it been only about the present day life of Elizabeth Goodweather and her neighbors. The Appalachian Mountains are a beautiful setting for a novel. The small town residents are interesting and the culture is fascinating. I enjoy stories with strong female characters and this book had several. Running a farm and a business after the death of a husband is not something many modern day women would attempt. I admire Elizabeth's pluck and her intelligence.
What I did not like was the narrative of Little Sylvie. Page after page written in the dialect of Appalachia became so annoying that I stopped reading the italicized part of the book.
I really wish I could give this book a higher rating, but a little less than half the book was unreadable. Before buying another Vicki Lane book, I will peek inside to find out how much of the book is devoted to painful to read dialect.

Vicki Lane draws a lovely picture of Asheville and the surrounding environs (I visit there frequently). Her main character is a middle-aged widow who runs a flower and herb farm; you can almost see/smell her products. The story unfolds in a natural way and does not seem contrived. A slow-witted man, the son of her elderly neighbor and friend, has died and her friend is convinced he was murdered. Slowly Elizabeth comes to the realization that her friend is right. The elderly neighbors are lovingly drawn. Elizabeth mets a friend of her late husband and he comes to play a larger role in her life. As she and Phillip become closer in a believable way, they work to solve the murder (he is a former police detective). The ending grows out of the plot and does not seem forced.

This book was written very uniquely, honestly and with a twist. I live in Asheville, NC and related to all the places mentioned in the book. I think I enjoyed reading something with romance, suspense, and every other emotion you can think of in one book and still not wanting to put it down waiting for the conclusion (and believe me it was a surprise)!!!
