I haven't read this book yet, but I've read others in the series. They're lightweight mysteries set in a small Minnesota town, and the heroine owns a needlework shop. The author always includes a small needlework pattern at the end of the book. I like the series, and this entry is waiting on my shelf now.

I purchased the book because it's by another Minnesota native, and I too am interested in a variety of handwork crafts. That said, I have to admit that I'm in agreement with those who found it a little disappointing. It is the very first of the series that I've read, and since others have indicated that they enjoyed the other books more than this one, I will try again.
In my case I found that the central character's confinement to her apartment because of an accident somewhat claustrophobic and limiting. Having to learn everything about the murder and its venue second hand was not very satisfying or illustrative, even given the stream-of-conscious narration from the main suspect. I felt a little blind. I realize that the Nero Wolfe series employs this tactic to show the genius and eccentricity of its central character, but the active agent, Archie Goodwin, is such a colorful and informative one that there is less of a feeling of limitation imposed (see Seven Complete Nero Wolfe Novels.) The character of Goddy, while charming and interesting, lacked the witty personality and acute observation of Archie.
I'll try another and see.

In Knitting Bones, Monica Ferris changes the rules of her Betsy Devonshire's mysteries. Normally, Betsy gets involved in a mystery and leaves the shop in the capable hands of her assistant, Goddy, while she solves the case. This time, Betsy is in a cast and laid up in her apartment when a check for monies raised by the Embroiderers Guild is stolen by Allie Germaine's husband. Allie begs Betsy to help because she knows her husband is innocent and she wants him found. Betsy can't investigate so Goddy has to go into the field, while Betsy, a bit high on pain meds, has to stay in her apartment, collecting the bits and pieces of the puzzle brought to her by others. Will she still be able to solve the crime?
I like it when an author takes the time to upend our expectations of the series and its characters. Seeing Goddy learn that it's not as easy as he thought to investigate a crime and having him struggle to leave his preconceived notions out of his questions is interesting. And, this is not the Goddy we've known and loved. Sure, he's still flagrantly gay, generous, witty, and charming -- but he's also been steadied by his brush with murder and jail. All the regulars are back and you can enjoy the shop regulars coming together to aid Betsy when she can't do things for herself.
One of the hardest lessons to learn is to accept help when it's offered. Betsy is no different because she's learned to rely on herself and it's hard to accept help -- can she do it gracefully, or as gracefully as you can when you're wobbly on crutches and everything takes forever to do by yourself. This is more than a mystery being investigated and solved, it's people learning new skills and abilities even if those abilities are just a new way of looking at the world and the people around them.
If you've enjoyed the other books in the series, you'll certainly enjoy this one with the changed roles of these main characters. If you haven't read any of the series before, take a chance. Ferris gives enough back story to get you into the story and you can go back and read them from the beginning is you wish (and you probably will).

I've read all the books in this series & have enjoyed all of them until now. I liked this book the least of all in the series. Betsy gets hurt right at the beginning of the book & the rest of the book is devoted to Betsy coaching Godwin on how to be an amateur detective. It was alright enough to finish reading and the end of the book was actually enjoyable and the mystery within was good - but the whole center about coaching Goddy the basics of sleuthing skills was nerve racking for me.

This mystery gives us an interesting twist as it puts Godwin at center stage since Betsy is out with a broken leg. It gives the author the ability to really develop his character in this installation. I would say that there wasn't enough store time (half the fun of a cozy mystery to me), but this really was a fun new addition to the series. The mystery definitely keeps you hopping and is a great addition to a stellar series.
