Running a small business is never easy and when craft storeowner Jo McAllister hears that her landlord may sell her shop, she goes to confront developer Parker Holt. She arrives at his home only to find his body - it turns out he was murdered. The police have plenty of suspects but when they seem to focus on one particular suspect, Jo thinks they have the wrong person and she, along with the help of crafters in her beading workshop, sets out to find the real killer. But Jo needs to be careful or she may be the subsequent victim.
"String of Lies" is a very enjoyable if somewhat flawed cozy mystery. This is the second book in Mary Ellen Hughes' Craft Corner Mystery Series and it's even better than the very first one "Wreath of Deception". Jo continues to grow as a character as she is slowly recovering from the death of her husband and worried about losing her business. Her budding romance with Lieutenant Ross Morgan (it seems that all cozy mystery heroines must have a romance with a cop) is being handled nice and slow by Hughes which makes it enjoyable to read. The craft elements are nicely done and I love the beading workshops Jo has - I wish there were more in the book. The addition of a male crafter - retired butcher Vernon Dobson, is a welcome one and I hope he appears in future books in the series.
Unfortunately, while the craft elements in the book are well done and the characters are well written, the mystery aspects aren't nearly as well done. The way Parker Holt is killed is unbelievable; it leaves far too much up to chance. There is a second murder in the book that I saw coming early. I also figured out early on who the killer was, although I kept hoping I was wrong because I liked the character. Still, despite these flaws, I really liked the book - Hughes has a way of writing that pulls you into the story and she creates characters you really care about.
"String of Lies" isn't perfect, but it's still an enjoyable cozy mystery and I recommend it to cozy mystery fans.

I have read and enjoyed Wreath of Deception but String of Lies comes up short. I found myself getting bored with the lack of action. A seasoned mystery reader can figure out "who done it" within the very first few chapters and there weren't any big plot twists to keep the reader interested except who was eating lunch where and with whom. I hope the third book in this series is more eventful.

Jo McAllister, owner of Jo's Craft Corner, discovers that Parker Holt has been buying up some of the neighboring buildings and putting her friends' businesses out of business. Fearing for the future of her new business, she tries to contact her landlord Max. Not being able to reach him, she decides to talk to Parker himself. Easier said than done. So she finds out from Dan, her friend Carries' husband, when Parker will be home and heads over to confront him in person. Unfortunately he is dead. Someone set up an electrical trap, and the police are pointing the finger at Dan's construction crew, especially Xavier. Xavier's wife, Sylvia, had worked for Parker Holt. Parker had made unsavory advances, and Xavier was not happy.
Jo and her friends set out to help clear Xavier before his very first child is born. Plus Dan's business is suffering from the bad press. But can they pin down the killer's identity without the killer targeting them?
I really enjoy this series. Jo and Carrie, Dan's wife and Jo's friend, are such great characters. The author has done such a great job of creating a small town you would want to go visit and especially a crafting store many women would like to frequent. The various customers really add to the story and provide a lot of great sub-stories in each book.
There are a crafting tip and directions at the back of the book as well. I highly recommend this book and series. It's always a great, quick reading cozy.

I enjoyed this book very much. It was written in a style that I wanted to read every single word and read it slowly. It was a " who done it" that I couldn't figure out till the very, very end. No typo errors in this book. That was refreshing, since so many books are not that way any more. I also didn't know anything about the craft of beading and enjoyed the detailed way the craft was explained throughout the story. The personalities of each character added to making a all around good mystery book. I am looking forward to the subsequent book in this series.
