Victoria Thompson is one of the best writers of a mystery series that has everything in it---murder and humor. The times she writes about, the very early 19th century is both fascinating and sad. Everyday upper crust people are accurately portrayed, and their downfall is something you look forward to. She has a lot of historical facts, and she's just very good at what she's doing. I hope she keeps writing for a long time, because her Gaslight Mystery Books are a great series.

This was the very first book I read in the series so it may be that I need to try more of them to get used to the characters. I did not like the male protagonist at all, only marginally liked the female protagonist and was disappointed by the mystery itself. The bits of historical accuracy were interesting but nothing new.

This is a very appealing series with a strong and intelligent heroine. There is a love interest with her "friend" Detective Sergeant Malloy, and lots of new-born babies. Sarah Brandt is a midwife and in the course of her work she stumbles on many family secrets, up to and including murder. In this book she delivers a baby in Little Italy, but when the baby appears to be full-term and not premature as the family thought, it opens up a whole bunch of trouble. When the new mother is found dead the subsequent day, Sarah knows that she needs to get Malloy involved. The book was interesting because it spotlighted the unrest between the Italians and the Irish in turn-of-the-century New York City. The mystery is an easy one to figure out though, but the characters help keep the book interesting. I really do enjoy this Gaslight Series.

Excellent mysteries. The entire series is good, but this is one of the best. The characters become very real after the very first book.

This series is enchanting and develops under two plots the murder mystery and the relationship between cop and detective. The period selected is one of my favorite eras and is deveopled with wisdom and technique for the era involved.
