That is the blurb for this book and yes to some effect it is true, however it starts to deviate from the expected path almost immediately. Not in itself a bad thing, the book is a fun little read and it begins the story of Emerald O'Brien which I found delightful in all the continuing books. It has the paranormal in it, but very little tarot... so if this is where your interest lies do not go here. That said. I still enjoyed the reading and the series really needs to be read in sequence to truly enjoy the character developement. I so much appreciated this series over the other one by the author not only for the character developemnet and stories, but lack of what I am now told is the Anita Blake factor.

This is an OK book, but not great. Galenorn stumbles in a lot of places throughout the book and it's never clear if this is supposed to be a murder mystery or a supernatural thriller. It's too simple to be a combination of both.
I give Galenorn credit for her descriptions of the supernatural elements, though -- they are quite good.
I think the main problem I have with the book is that the main character is not a sympathetic one, and is actually someone who I'd never want to interact with. She has a lot of personality flaws that make it hard to care about her or what happens to her.
Sex scenes in books are hard to write well. Galenorn's attempts at these come off as unintentionally funny.
It did keep my interest to the end of the book -- I did want to find out how it ended.

Emerald O'Brien is the owner of Chintz `n China Tea Room, she sells a blend of china and teas and does tarot readings as well. She's also able to talk to the dead and the one currently talking to her is Susan Mitchell. Susan showed up in Emerald's bedroom one night asking for help by writing "I was murdered by my husband but no one knows. Help me." At very first Emerald isn't sure what to do, yes she can talk to the dead and knows how to deal with spirits (thanks in part to her grandmother's help growing up) but she's a shop owner, not a ghost buster.
When she and her children are attacked by another entity, one brought back by Susan by mistake, Emerald knows she must fight back and begins to dig deeper into Susan's life. While doing so, she finds a rumour that says that Susan's husband Walter beat her, an accusation that he molested her daughter, and that he's been cut out of her will, he gets nothing. If he doesn't get anything, then who killed her and why?
This book wasn't bad, I liked the fourth book A Harvest of Bones better, but this was interesting. It's a little slow at the start but it does pick up speed as we get to know the characters better.

As others mentioned, I was really looking forward to reading this series, being interested in mystery, metaphysical & romance. The characters and mystery-solving angles were very poorly developed, despite potential for them to be. I have never read a book where so much time was wasted continually talking about junk food and espresso consumption. Is the author that obsessed with food? I already bought "Witchling," so I'll hope it is better!

This is the 1st book in the series I have read, and I will read another. However, although there is some mystery to this book, there is a lot of paranormal stuff too. I am not into seances and ghosts, but it is different, if you are looking for different. I will definitely give another book in this series a chance.
