For a "You are there" feel for all the rough and tumble, class distinctions, and quirky characters , this is a very fine effort! The life of a mid-wife on the Lower East Side circa 1895 is perfectly done, and superstitious, naive, and mainly ignorant characters of the time is also excellent, not to mention the "400" feel led by Mrs. Vanderbilt herself, and others here. A very strong performance, but with a letdown at the end when the culprit is revealed, and the extremities of some characters may not really ring with truth, though I had considered this poosibility all along, so perhaps these clues thruout were well- drawn. Excellent, but not quite 5- star for this somewhat hardened mystery buff!

I loved this book. It is thrilling and interesting. The twist(at the end) was amazing. That isn't to say there are not problems with it as it was sort of predictable and a bit slow paced ion many places. I think it is interesting that both the main characters have spouses who died in some relation to the other main character's occupation.

I am ususally not a mystery lover, but this series has dragged me in. I love the characters, and the chemistry between Malloy and Sarah. This is a great very first book, and they just get progressively better!

I thoroughly enjoyed "Murder on Astor Place." The mystery was interesting, & the characters were likable-- even Frank Malloy turned out to be appealing. Though the mystery was intriguing, I guessed who the murderer was pretty quickly. I think there is a lot of potential for this series with several plot threads available. The murder of Sarah's husband will, no doubt, factor into another installment.
My one complaint is that at times, the constant descriptions of the frigidity of high society & the corruption of the NYPD became annoying. Why not have the characters' actions reveal these details?

I love mystery books that take place in old NYC. This book helped me understand what New York was like at the turn of the century. Well written and very interesting.
