Product Description:

The little girl was only five, much too young to die -- a lost treasure who should have been cherished, not murdered. She could have been J.P. Beaumont's kid, and the determined Seattle homicide detective won't rest until her killer pays dearly. But the hunt is leading Beaumont into a murky world of religious fanaticism, and toward a beautiful, perilous obsession all his own. And suddenly Beau himself is a target -- because faith can be dangerous...and love can kill.

Rated by buyers 2 out of 5 stars - Laughably bad
*Spoiler Alert* This one has it all--ludicrous plot, hackneyed dialogue, horrendously written sex scenes, cardboard characters...

First of all, the main character is supposed to be a seasoned homicide detective, and he's one of the stupidest (not to mention unlikeable) characters I've ever encountered--and that's saying something, buddy! Are we really to believe that this cynical, hardened cop is going to marry a weirdo only a week after he's met her? I don't care how attractive she is--the woman ain't right. Also, the fortune she leaves him at the end of the book would have been lost to the countless lawsuits filed by her victims.

I'm giving this one two stars instead of one because I think the author did a good job of using Seattle as the setting. I've never been there, and she gave a good description of the city.

Oh, and sometimes the book is so bad it's good--I found myself laughing out loud at some passages.

Some reviewers have indicated that the author has become a better writer--I certainly hope so!

Rated by buyers 3 out of 5 stars - Slow Start
I've always been glad I didn't met J.P. Beaumont in the beginning. When I find an author I enjoy I make a point to collect their previous works and read them. If I had encountered the very first entry of this series I would have missed some great stories later on.
It is tough work setting up new characters while leaving something to be added later, but "Until Proven Guilty" was shallow with expected routines.
If you are new to the series, start in the middle, then read the beginning, you'll become a fan.
Nash Black, author of "Sins of the Fathers" and "Travelers."

Rated by buyers 5 out of 5 stars - Great beginning to a terrific series
I love this Seattle-based series - Until Proven Guilty is the first. Read them in order! Well written and engaging. If you like these books, try Jance's other series set in Arizona starring Joanna Brady.

Rated by buyers 3 out of 5 stars - Predictable but not terrible
Well, finally, that's over. Not because it sucked, but that it was inevitable. The very first JP Beaumont mystery was not a mystery at all. The reader simply waits for the inevitable. It's not bad in the prospect of making the city (eg. Spenser:Boston, etc) a main component of the story. Unfortunately, it's all rather obvious. I liked it, but saw the ending coming from pages in the double digits. However, being a novel, it runs into the triple digits. The protagonist, JP Beaumont, is well-realized and worth following. The rest, which I won't comment on in deference to new readers, is obvious to the point of distraction. But read on I did and will. It's the very first in a long-running and well-loved series wherein the city is as much a character as the guy who actually solves the case. I love Seattle and it probably had a lot to do with why I forgave much in this book. In my eyes, the reader could solve the case with no assistance from the detective. But after all is said and done, the reader is rewarded with engaging characters, situations, and most of all, settings, for a good time for the reader. You won't be surprised, but you may like it.

Rated by buyers 5 out of 5 stars - One of the best dectective mysteries!
I loved this book and I highly recommend this series, especially if you live in Seattle, WA or have visited the state of Washington. J.A. Jance keeps you turning the pages to see what happens subsequent and I read the very first 3 books in the J.P. Beaumont series which are in (Sentenced to die) in 10 days. Loved it.
