Product Description:
Darkness falls…despair abounds…evil reigns…

Eragon and his dragon, Saphira, have just saved the rebel state from destruction by the mighty forces of King Galbatorix, cruel ruler of the Empire. Now Eragon must travel to Ellesmera, land of the elves, for further training in the skills of the Dragon Rider: magic and swordsmanship. Soon he is on the journey of a lifetime, his eyes open to awe-inspring new places and people, his days filled with fresh adventure. But chaos and betrayal plague him at every turn, and nothing is what it seems. Before long, Eragon doesn’t know whom he can trust.

Meanwhile, his cousin Roran must fight a new battle–one that might put Eragon in even graver danger.

Will the king’s dark hand strangle all resistance? Eragon may not escape with even his life. . . .

Amazon.com Review:
Surpassing its popular prequel Eragon, this second volume in the Inheritance trilogy shows growing maturity and skill on the part of its very young author, who was only seventeen when the very first volume was published in 2003. The story is solidly in the tradition (some might say derivative) of the classic heroic quest fantasy, with the predictable cast of dwarves, elves, and dragons--but also including some imaginatively creepy creatures of evil.

The land of Alagaesia is suffering under the Empire of the wicked Galbatorix, and Eragon and his dragon Saphira, last of the Riders, are the only hope. But Eragon is young and has much to learn, and so he is sent off to the elven forest city of Ellesmera, where he and Saphira are tutored in magic, battle skills, and the ancient language by the wise former Rider Oromis and his elderly dragon Glaedr. Meanwhile, back at Carvahall, Eragon's home, his cousin Roran is the target of a siege by the hideous Ra'zac, and he must lead the villagers on a desperate escape over the mountains. The two narratives move toward a massive battle with the forces of Galbatorix, where Eragon learns a shocking secret about his parentage and commits himself to saving his people.

The sheer size of the novel, as well as its many characters, places with difficult names, and its use of imaginary languages make this a challenging read, even for experienced fantasy readers. It is essential to have the plot threads of the very first volume well in mind before beginning--the publisher has provided not only a map, but a helpful synopsis of the very first book and a much-needed Language Guide. But no obstacles will deter the many fans of Eragon from diving headfirst into this highly-awaited fantasy. (Ages 12 and up) --Patty Campbell

Meet Author Christopher Paolini
Christopher Paolini’s abiding love of fantasy and science fiction inspired him to begin writing his debut novel, Eragon, when he graduated from high school at age 15.

'Writing is the heart and soul of my being. It is the means through which I bring my stories to life. There is nothing like putting words on a page and knowing that they will summon certain emotions and reactions from the reader. In my writing, I strive for a lyrical beauty somewhere between Tolkien at his best and Seamus Heaney’s translation of Beowulf.' --Christopher Paolini

Paolini talks more about the series, and about what inspires him in this video clip.

The Eragon/Eldest Boxed Set

Want to learn more about the series? Check out our review of Eragon: Here's a great big fantasy that you can pull over your head like a comfy old sweater and disappear into for a whole weekend. Christopher Paolini began Eragon when he was just 15, and the book shows the influence of Tolkien, of course, but also Terry Brooks, Anne McCaffrey, and perhaps even Wagner in its traditional quest structure and the generally agreed-upon nature of dwarves, elves, dragons, and heroic warfare with magic swords. Rated by buyers 4 out of 5 stars - I like this book

There wasn't much that happened, except for a humoungous tremendous battle, and golden dragon. Even though Eragon was being very stupid. But what happened Christopher Paolini put into very close detail. He used a lot of weird words. For every five pages there were four words that I didn't know, such as "alembic" or "sanguine." My favorite character was Sephira. The fate of the dragons lies in her hands. You learn Eragon's true identity. And he is no longer human. You learn how Galbatorix is gaining power in gramarye. Most of the book takes place in the elf city of Ellesmera. There's a lot of dramatic changes in the story.

Rated by buyers 3 out of 5 stars - Even with the disappointments I had, I enjoyed the story
The subsequent book in the Inheritance cycle is Eldest. If you read my review of Eragon, you will see that I really enjoyed the book. I am mostly able to say the same for Eldest, with a loss of about 1/3 after reading it (and many critics trashed the book as well), but I'm a loyal reader and plan to finish the entire set (the fourth book has yet to be written as of this date) before I make a final conclusion.

Story overview:

With the death of Ajihad, the leader of the Varden, a new leader is chosen. Nasuada, Ajihad's daughter, ends up with the honor (or burden). Eragon swears fealty to her in order to satisfy the Varden's Council of Elders.

Roran, Eragon's cousin, is left to fend off an army of Galbatorix against Carvahall (their home town). He earns the name, Stronghammer, after his favorite choice of weapons. His fiancée is captured and the remainder of the town decides to travel to Surda, with Roran at the head.

Meanwhile, Eragon goes to Du Weldenvarden to be trained by the Elves, and he learns that he may not be as alone as he very first had thought. Both him and Saphira grow stronger, including a transformation that Eragon undergoes at a Blood-Oath Celebration. Once he learns that the Varden are in need of help, Eragon joins the battle only to end up facing a more experienced Dragon Rider.

My thoughts:

Even with the disappointments I had, I enjoyed the story. It was a bit slow in places, but I didn't really lose my concentration. Like Eragon, this one is not entirely unique, but I felt closer to the characters and cared more about what happened to them. I also really liked the character of Elva, who is a product of an unintentionally bad blessing from Eragon and Saphira.

Eldest.
The awesome continuation of Aragon is a highly likable story full of mysteries and more magic. We left The young Aragon with his dragon hurt and with an invitation to visit the land of the elves where he will find a teacher who will help him find the inner strength he posses. Aragon is challenge to his limits by the elves some of whom like him and others who don't. His connection with his dragon become stronger to the point that together they made a great weapon. His enemies fear him and his friends see him as their savior. This great writing and awesome tale will keep you turning the pages until late at night.
It is hard to see how others can said that this book is like someone else's. There is only one plot to write about that is evil versus good. Everyone who had written a book has the same plot. It is the telling of the plot that make a book great and other's not. But still everything that is in the fantasy world was written by someone else a million plus times over. I love to write and read but when I read I take the books as they come... I would never compare this one to that one. I do not limit myself by putting down such rules.
If you didn't like it then fine, move on and since you are such an expert... why don't you try writing a book better than his.
