Rated by buyers 3 out of 5 stars - Worth reading, nothing entirely facinating
I was expecting more out of this book by the heralded author. I now realize after reading that this was his very first novel, and I have to say it is apparent in the storytelling. Though the story is good, and interesting, I can liken it to a great tale whose characters have been efficiently cuttout from cardboard. I would have expected more treachery, and more emotion from a character (4 in-fact) who has lost everything, and worked hard to get it all back. There is no backstabbing, or in other words, depth to the story.

The main character (the one who stole all those pennies) steals in a very well-thought out plot involving the stock market. The men he dupes group together to take revenge on him to the tune of the money they lost, not a penny more, and not a penny less.

The title itself quickly becomes a cliche, and though the reader can expect a twist or two, the tale is a quick one, with very little character development.

Rated by buyers 3 out of 5 stars - Something is missing
The book's story is excellent and it'll keep you reading all the time. Each and every one's scams were scrumptiously plotted but the problem is that the end misses the punch line so when you'll finish the book you'll be a little disappointed -with the last swindle.

Rated by buyers 5 out of 5 stars - The ultimate story of revenge
A young Polish man grows up to be a ruthless millionaire. He rips off four Englishmen who then develop a creative and elaborate plan to get their money back. A great read.

Rated by buyers 5 out of 5 stars - A master of irony
This was my very first Jeffrey Archer novel and I was very impressed. (Incidentally, I believe this was Jeffrey Archer's very first novel.) Archer is a master of irony, a modern-day O. Henry. This is a masterful novel of revenge. If you like Ocean's 11, you will LOVE this book.
Plenty of "twists in the tale."

Rated by buyers 5 out of 5 stars - Fast and very readable
I recently found a copy of Jeffrey Archer's very first book in an Op-Shop and nearly passed it by..it was an old and battered original paperback, and was convinced that I'd read it 30 years ago when it was very first published. Flicking through it, it dawned on me that I'd only THOUGHT I'd read it and was delighted to start on it at once, and what a super read it is! It's in the fresh language of a new author and full of the funny and intriguing plots of four men who have been swindled out of large sums of money by an American con man, Harvey Metcalfe. The leader of the four men is a brilliant mathematician who is working as a Professor at Oxford University and who thought up the idea of the four "suckers" getting together to not only get revenge on Metcalfe but also to retrieve their money. The men, a Harley Street doctor, the owner of a prestigious London art gallery and the son of an Earl, concoct several ingenious plans to this end and the result is a very likeable book which was great fun to read, albeit 30 years after everyone else!
