THE CONTEST: YOUR WORST NIGHTMARE COME TRUE

Dr. Stephen Swain has found himself locked in the after-hours darkness of the New York Public Library. It isn’t a mistake. He’s been entombed in the historic sanctuary for a reason—as the guest of an unknown host, chosen for a night of fun and games. He’s unprepared. He’s afraid. And he’s not alone.

Six other contestants roam the grey halls, room by room, floor by floor, in the dead silence. Each strapped with an explosive set to detonate should they escape before the night is over. The terms are simple: seven players enter—only one will leave.

Now Swain must navigate the labyrinth to outwit the unknown moves of his mysterious opponents, and to outlast the unimaginable dangers that await him. Against insurmountable odds the contest has begun. Should he win, the greatest, most unfathomable terror lies at the night’s end: the very reason behind the game…

Rated by buyers 4 out of 5 stars - A once in a millennium battle royale
A once in a millennium battle royale takes place in the NYC library between an unsuspecting and unbelieving earthling, his child, and crazy creatures from around the world in which the winner has an unbeaten streak better than the Harlem Globetrotters. But then again, it has never faced a pissed off New Yorker. Cool fights, a little sci-fish, but fun.

Rated by buyers 4 out of 5 stars - Good action
I got this book many years ago and really liked it. I have since recommended it to many younger readers and from what I hear from them they all love it as well. It's not too deep but will keep you reading on into the night.

Rated by buyers 4 out of 5 stars - One Contest that is Easy to Win
Some aliens decide to have a Battle Royale and invite a human to help blow up the New York Public Library.

Impossible situations, improbable escapes, action movie physics, indescribable monsters, huge explosions, and after all that a perfectly logical (in that it follows the rules of the novel) ending.

For a very first book, it's pretty good. It's not perfect, but this kind of novel doesn't work if it is too polished. Action flicks are fun because they could not possibly be real, so we are allowed the fantasy of running from explosions and falling down elevator shafts and still walking away from the wreckage.

This is a book to be enjoyed between two heavier novels, like a literary aperitif.

Rated by buyers 4 out of 5 stars - I Loved It

Matthew Reilly was born in Sydney in 1974 and studied Law at the University of New South Wales. He has had Number 1 Bestsellers in Australia, where he lives, with his books Ice Station and Temple. The author lives in Sydney.

It always seems that reviewers, either here on Amazon or in the Press in general, criticise Matthew Reilly's books but the fact remains that they are bought by a great number of people. Typical criticism is that they are too far fetched, not historically correct, or even that the author is making up history as he goes along have all been aimed at his books. Very few say that they are not exciting or that they are boring.

I am sure the author has simply written the books to entertain the reader and I think that they do that in spades. In a book of this kind who is offended if the facts are bent or incorrect, certainly not me. What the author does, he does very well. Some would say that this particular book is more far-fetched than most but it is a gripping and exciting read. The story revolves around a contest for seven people. The time and the place of this contest is the New York State Library at night. Seven contestants will enter but only one will leave . . .

Rated by buyers 4 out of 5 stars - Fun and fast paced even if over the top
Dr. Stephen Swain considers his life with his daughter fairly routine as he raises her alone after the death of his wife. He certainly does not expect to be suddenly teleported from his home on Long Island to the New York Public Library to be face to face with aliens - six competing monsters to be exact. And he is quickly informed that he is the seventh competitor in a deadly high stakes intergalactic game called the Presidian. It is a battle to the death amongst various species throughout the galaxy. The only way to win is to kill the other six competitors without being killed by one of them or a deadly monster that has also been placed in the labyrinth.

To complicate matters further, when Swain was teleported he was holding his young daughter so now Holly is in the labyrinth with him fighting for her life. Two NYPD officers had been stationed in the library for security and they have also become unwitting players in the fight. Swain, of course, feels as though he must do all he can to protect the other innocent lives which serves as a hindrance to his own actions. But when they discover that one of the alien competitors has brought in small creatures - illegal to the rules of the game - to help him hunt, it seems that all of the cards are stacked against Swain and his friends. He must use his quick wit if he has any hope of surviving this deadly sport.

Reilly is the king of the fast paced page turning thriller. His stories are always over the top, but no reader should be surprised at the crazy contents if they read the jacket and knew that aliens would be involved. Once you suspend reality it is a fun and heart stopping thriller that will keep you glued from cover to cover.
